so my GF's hard drive crashed and i had to get her a new one.

Well now i'm trying to use her old one as my backup drive.

The BIOS will see the drive, but windows will not. Why? What can i do to make the drive recognizable?

I'd try to see if FDISK will see the drive. If you don't have DOS try downloading FreeDOS from www.freedos.org and use their FDISK. If FDISK won't see the drive then you're probably out of luck. It it will then I would recommend trying to partition and format the drive. Windows won't like the format but it may recognize the drive to allow you to repartition and reformat the drive.

Fdisk is also on a win98 boot disk, available from bootdisk.com Also, make sure you have the jumpers set properly and the cable chained correctly.
