Usually it means that the drive is near death, and you should backup your data. I have a drive that has been whining for about 6months, and hasnt died yet, but I only run it for an OS drive, and not important data.
 
yeah it could mean its getting ready to take a crap, but some drives with age/use will begin to make diffrence sounds even though they are prefectly healthy. i'd backup just to be on the safeside though.
