Does the heatsink have to cover the etire surface (AMD64fx)

there is a 2 or 3 mm strip of the CPU that is not in contact with the heatsink. Is this ok?

I did also post this question in 'AMD CPU's', I wouldn't have double posted but I'm desperate.

That's because A64's have heatspreaders, so the actual CPU is covered by the heatsink, you just can't see it. If the heatsink doesn't cover the entire heatspreader then you should be fine.
 
You'll find that a lot of heatsinks will only make partial contact with the CPU, ideally directly above the actual core, and will leave some of the heatspreader exposed. If anything, it's a godsend for all those people who get too generous with the thermal paste! haha
