Only thing I had time for today was to start on the frame of the superstructure, the box I was showing is actually the inside support structure of this rack :D

Those black clips are actually binder clips that I am using as clamps, the ones at the top are the 1" size. I used those because the cheapest clamps at Home Depot were $2.89ea, That is too much for me. A box of these clips cost me only $4. and I got 10 clips :attn:

Hmm.... This project is very interesting - definitely something you don't see everyday. I have a suggestion for cooling that might help you out a lot - that system looks perfect for a chimney!....

I saw that a couple of days ago. very interesting, but I have a watercooling thing planned for that rack  an unbelieveable task ahead of me!

Oh man that looks sweet. I just built a ghetto k'nex case that only can hold 3 comps :/....So far its just music server and im going to be adding a smoothwall to it very very soon here.

That board llooks very similiar to mine....Is it a pII 350 mhz in there?

Pegged the board exactly.. That one is to be used as a Firewall/DHCP server, and of course It will be running SmoothWall  gotta love it!.

Haha yea, now i just have to get smoothwall working on it....

oops, a set back. I was getting ready to set the screws in the Aluminum supports when I noticed that they were just a little off. Well, not a little but 1/2". Just what I get when in a hurry! Like I had said, this is one of the reasons that I like to use the Aquarium sealer for glue to start the construction. You get to correct errors easier. Not to mention that it helps absorb sound.

At least this pic shows how it is held together tightly while waiting for the silicone to dry (again! ) using my ghetto clamps
After it is dry, which will take a couple of hours or so, i will begin drilling for the bolts.

In my impatience, I decided to test the the high density capability of the tray placement, it'll work...
But now I need to finish 17 more, well actually 13 but I want a few extra.
check this out:

even before I add any NIC cards, there is a lot of room both above and below the tray. But first I have to finish bolting the inside frame. I don't want to risk anything falling apart.

Woah, i never knew you were gunna do that. Thats sweet. Hhehe i just got my smoothwall up and its the coolest thing in the world :) . I did it on the borad you have. Nice work with that. I like how you did it on both sides.

Unfortunately that tray is the only one that will be used like that for now. Most of the trays will be set up for that but won't be use that configuration, yet. Thats where its getting to be really big money. I think its bad enough that I will have to cool 15 boards in that box but 30? The cooling setup could handle it but what a push... :(

Glad you were able to smoothie that board :attn: I have used smoothwall since it was a first beta and liked it then. Enjoy! :santa2:

completed another section of the big box, actually the supporting frame. This frame will give support enough for the glass doors on the front, and a way to properly anchor the back panel on

http://sc.lwcma.com/sc07.jpg

At the top I put three 120mm holes for the fans I have on order. Dremel tools are really great for that. Although I think a proper hole saw would have been better...

Whoa! bad pic... but you can see the new side panel being slid into place.
Underneath this panel is just space enough for......
http://sc.lwcma.com/sc09.jpg

Another dark pic, but if you squint real good, you can see the pins being used to hold the removable side panel in place. once these are in place the panel will move very little.
http://sc.lwcma.com/sc10.jpg

This dark pic sort of shows the panel after all the retaining pins are in place. this treatment has been done to each side and the top.
http://sc.lwcma.com/sc11.jpg

Now to get the back panel and front access doors in place. still have not done any drilling on the aluminum frame inside. really have to finish that sometime, but I am in no huge hurry...

I still have no idea what color it needs to be painted. Most likely Black Laquer. That color looks better on a large cabinet like that. Another thing is that I just have to find a proper name for it. :attn:

I got a request, if you got like a mid tower or somthing handy can you set it up next to it to give us a sense of scale? It looks huge, but hard to tell with pictures.

Omg, wow, thats huge! I want it :), I need something for my so far two servers. I want something like that but slightly smaller.

I origionally wanted a box, well more of a cube that was 2'x2'x2' but then decided that something this large would be much cooler :attn:
The smaller box would hold as many as 6 boards, But I needed serious upgrades.

I agree with two of the above ideas... either
1) Paint it an arrangement of blue, red, green, and yellow like a child's toy-box (perhaps with "A B C D" on it and "1 2 3 4" on it.
2) Coat it in ply-wood/particle board and stencil something like "Top-Secret" or "Fragile" on it. Of course, this would kill a lot of the work you've already done in framing the thing.

Excellent work, more pics!

reminds me of how my dad is always bring home stuff and my mom looks at him and say "were the F*** are you gona put that now?!!!!"
