Dust. LOTS of dust.

Wonder how much I could sell the dust for on eBay (since I don't find any money in the thing :D).... ;)

i have seen people bid on an empty box before, so you never know with e-bay

worst i've found while cleaning..... a wasp nest (it was kept in a storage building).

worst i've found while working on a comp for someone else.... thier kid (during his potty training years) decided the computer was a great place to pee........

I've found:

--a case badge
--lots of dust
--a thumbscrew (luckily nothing had been shorted)
--fan blade
--crumbs
--modern Chinese coinage

The strangest by far for me has to be a dusty 28.8 modem card when I opened up a Dell case to swap out the Ethernet card. It was jammed into a slot and appeared to fit...this was an ex-IT box. I have no idea who owned it previously nor why they decided to put a 28.8 in there (or where they got it).

The network cable was jammed into the port on the modem...no wonder it wasn't working. Cable, somewhat miraculously, was fine (and so was the NIC I had originally been asked to fix). Modem card is now residing in my box o' junk.

I found a fortune (the kind in a cookie) when I removed the motherboard from my case. No idea how it got there. My guess is that it got pulled in by a fan and somehow wound up behind the motherboard but for all intensive purposes, gnomes could have put it there...
The fortune?
"Today is your lucky day."
And just why did I have to remove my motherboard on that day? Because a cap had leaked onto the circuits, shorting out my board and killing my slot a 750 @ 1000.
Oh the irony.
Since that day, it has been tradition to tape that fortune on the motherboard tray of every new case I get.

lol.. with luck like that.......who needs bad motherboards..

Here's a good one for you..

I was asked to come over and advise what to upgrade/replace on a friend's system. We unplug it, pick up the case and there is this loud crash INSIDE the case. So, we immeadiatly remove the case cover to find about 6 CDs inside the case. Seems there 3yo found a small slot under the CDROM drive and over time had placed the CDs inside the case, and they set on the bottom of the cage drive untill I moved it and they fell to the bottom of the case.. lol

I found a can of vanilla coke in my computer (no kidding). I must have put it there this summer when I was working on it and just found it last week when I threw a wireless card in the box so I could lan with a friend's lappy (it had no RJ-45, but had 56K - how weird is that?)

was it opened? if it was...eww, if not, i would just drink it right there and then.
on a parallel note-
my name on multiplayer games used to be be "cokeinmycomp", because i used to hide cans of coke in there during the summer so i could just reach over and bust one open when i got thirsty.

LMAO

thats a FAST mini-fridge... well... not fridge EXACTLY, but... well, it uh.. yea, it erm, stores stuff..

ok... well it wasnt me, and it wasnt a comp... but i was readin over on xbox scene this guy that bought a cheap xbox off some kid took it home to mod it, and when he got around to open it it was totally full of cockroaches! and there was like dead roachparts stuck o all the components... gross.

I found a FIC 503+ (at days) motherboard completely covered with cockroach droppings. The bottom of the case had rodent droppings in it as well VERY NASTY. I have found for smokers cases that simple green and water work best, only the case though. The motherboard is best cleaned in a dishwasher, with the CMOS battery and any fans and procs out. Just make sure the board dries out for a few days before replacing anything.

You can do the same with a keyboard if something gets spilled on it. Again.. let it dry out for a few days before use..

Mobo in a dishwasher....but let it dry out after a few days....
That's an awsome tip I might need someday~!!~!! Thanks!

You know those grungy basements people have that smell all weird....have dust and paper work all over the place and they use it every day?! Well I was on a tech call for one of those "older" people cuz their monitor was all wonky.... I assumed graphics card (i was right), so I opened up the case to take it out and see...

I swear I found enough cat hair (from a long haired putty-tat :p ) to make a kitten. It was long fluffy hair so it was a mess in the case. I couldn't see the case itself when I took the front off ... It was nasty ... At the bottom of the case were ballz of kat hair!!! ..... none of the fans worked cuz the motors were caked with kitty hair!!!!!

Ok all,

The motherboard-in-a-dishwasher will work. Your wife/mother/significant other that takes care of the dishwashing may hate you afterwards though. Before you begin the cleaning, write down all available numbers from any sticker on the board, remove all memory, processors and cards from it. Remove the cmos battery for at least 30 minutes before the washing commences, and leave it out until 2 or 3 days after the board has been washed and you are SURE that it is fully dry. Do NOT try to place the board in an oven to speed dry it. Just let it air dry. Use the liquid dishwasher detergent, not the powder. Also, I assume no responsibility for anything that may go wrong. HAPPY WASHING :D

Personally: I wouldn't risk it. I just don't like the idea of putting my computer through 150F+ water for over an hour, not to mention putting it in there with soap to get into crevaces of the socket I will never get clean.

If someone has done it, well, more power to them

I found a bunch of wires and electronic gadgets in mine.I jerked them all out and now I have more room for my coke, rats, scorpions,cd's and believe it or not I even had room for my ash tray. The pc still doesn't work but its a pretty shade of crusty orange.
