Even 256Mb of video memory is quite enough for current games. I guess its just for marketing reasons "NO NO SIR, THIS CARD HAS 512 AKSHUN PAKT MB OF MEMORY, THIS WILL GIVE YOU 500X MORE PERFORMANCE OVER 256MB, OMG BUY THIS"... pfff ... im loving my sarcastic humor ^^.

512MB is completely unnecessary. 256MB will be plenty for at least a few years.

But, some people I'm sure will "upgrade" their current-generation card for one with 512MB. I know there's still a lot of people out there who judge performance just by the amount of RAM on the card.

how true. This also explains why slower cards with more ram sell for as much as faster cards with less ram. I remember those times like back when one company was issuing 128mb geforce2mx those used to sell for as much as a 64mb ti4200. Take 128mb ti200s, they sold for 64mb ti500 money. This is also why 9800xt have always sold for way more than 9800pros and now 9800xt sell for more than 6600gt

y that 512 mb card takes away my bragging rights damn it

Who needs a card with that much GRAM? I mean it doesn't have like 10 monitor output, nor do I know anyone with a nice enough monitor to enjoy games at like 2048x1532 or something equally ridiculous. It's mad IMO seeing as the current gen of cards started off at 128mb to go to 256, 512mb. I mean the last gen pretty much started at 128mb - 256mb so why such a big jump this time? You could like probably buy most of a rig for the price of that card.

I'd buy one  :)

yea a 512mb x850xt costing twice what your cpu does and seeing little to no performance gains over your 9700pro cause of cpu bottleneck. Good thing its pci-e only. x800xt is the last agp card I know. Most have a64s but those that have athlon xp or slower p4s are totally wasting an x800xt

Its only a few % higher clocked than 800xt though. Ah well this would be interesting if r520 does come out in agp, I hope not cause itll be useless on such slow rigs

i dont know, the 512mb ram would be useful for rendering and engineering applications. But this isnt the first card with 512MB. 3d labs wildcat has had 512mb for liek a year now if not more!

if they had 512-bit interface on the memory, now that would be a different story, or if they doubled the amount of rendering pipelines. However the 512mb on ATi is just a marketing scheme for fools who will buy a 5600 wiht 256mb over a 9800 pro with 128mb

I see people already buying up the 512mb, not sure how much those cost, probably $800 easy. what a waste, they can get a 256mb verson for much less and get the same performance or better yet get an x800xl and get 80-90% gaming performance for as little as $299
