Hi, :welcome:

Does anyone have any real comparison numbers between the 2 heatsinks? I have a 7000A-AlCu and am curious as to whether the 7700AlCu would be a decent upgrade. I've already got a buyer for the 7000AlCu and do like quiet fans. It's done a fairly good job for this Prescott so far.

Thanks in advance for all opinions. :)

well, the 7000 uses a 92mm fan inside, the 7700 uses a 120mm fan... its absolutely huge...

Don't expect huge difference, but if you've got a buyer, why not to try? Eventually think about XP-120 + quiet fan combo.
Problem with Zalman style coolers is that heatsink fins need to transport heat over pretty long range - distant areas aren't too effective. So big part of 7700 fins won't work too efficienty. With all-copper version this problem isn't so significiant, but still exists. I don't say that 7700 is bad, but just that with this design, twice size doesn't mean twice efficiency. Even with your 7000, when you touch sides of heatsink, you'll find that their temperature is close to ambient.

True, i have noticed that.

My thing with the XP-120 is that it is pretty damn expensive here ($65) + i'd need a fan to go with it (another 20-30), and I don't believe that anyone around here has the LGA775 version so another 10 bucks for the conversion kit. I can have the 7700AlCu for $50.

Keep those opinions coming! :)

Negliable.
I had the 7000 AlCu and got the 7700AlCu on sale for $34. Had to try it. Not worth the money IMHO. A bit quieter and a bit lower tone for the fan noise. I saw a 1°C difference

Or maybe a Freezer - these are pretty cheap... I've found many people satisfied with its performance, but one wasn't (close distance between fan and graphics card). I can't tell how it performs against 7000. My guess would be that it's slightly better than all-copper 7000, but that's only my guess. You'd need to check some reviews.
Yuriman was pleased with it, but he had fan replaced with Tornado :) There were also some reports on unmodded ones - about good efficiency and very low noise. Unfortunatly, I hadn't got opportunity to test it myself.

These are some reviews of freezers I googled (not only Freezer4, but they have similair construction) - reviewers were generally satisfied, but that's defineitly not XP-120 + 220CFM Delta performance

not bad at all.

I'm looking now towards the Thermaltake Silent 775. Looks to get some good reviews plus the fan is replaceable with a different 90mm fan. I'm sure i'll have to lap the bottom like crazy as Thermaltake's have never had good finishes in my experiences.

It doesn't seem to be bad according to reviews, I wonder which is better...
But if you want silence... A friend of mine has TT Silent Boost - I consider it pretty loud compared to my rig with Zalman-style cooler. And Silent Boost is also said to be "21dB" - for me it's noisy, but maybe I'm just another silence-freak. If you're too - fan will rather have to be repalced.

I have both the 7000 and the 7700 Zalman. Like others have said, you wont see outrageous temp drops by upgrading to the 7700. One thing I do like about the 7700 is that its size and overhang make a great memory and northbridge cooler. I also have an xp-120 and it works better then the Zalmans. The xp-120 also costs more and it can be a tough fit if you have capacitors close to your CPU. Most Intel 875 chipsets have this problem with the xp-120 so be sure and double check before you buy.

I started with the 7000AlCu and it worked fine for cooling my 2.8 Prescott. I upgraded to the 7700AlCu and the only difference is that I saw about a 2-3c drop in temps with the 7700AlCu, and it's quieter than the 7000 because the fan is 120mm so it pushes more air at a lower speed=less noise. But I sold my 7000AlCu today on eBay so it's going out monday!

on my 7000Cu (ALL COPPER), the fins are significantly wamer than my ambient... and don't give me crap that my panaflo is doin a bad job =P
