Does anyone happen to know when apple changes the specs on the computers they carry? I'm looking to get a powerbook sometime in the near future, and it would be nice to have that little heads-up so I don't end up buying one and the next day the shiny new one comes out.

I seriously doubt that Apple will tell you when they have new machines coming out, it just doesn't make sense from a business standpoint. Apple is notoriously tight-lipped about future products. However, there are websites that specialize in speculating on when and what is coming up next (remember, for the most part, it is all just speculation), here are two of them:

If you ordered a (example) 2GHz powerbook and the next day they came out with a 2.2GHz, you'd get shipped a 2.2GHz one. Apple is good about that. They do the same thing with their OS versions.

Ryan0rZ, sadly apple isn’t the hippy type company they used to be...

I ordered an iBook on April 1st, 2005. I read Slashdot.org later that day and after sifting through all the useless junk that got posted (that took a long good while, but that’s another story) a real post about apple and Tiger’s release was there.

I had to fight with apple for the last 3 days in order to get them to give in and send me Tiger for free. The free (as in beer) CDs were only for people that bought after the official press release, not anyone before. I just got lucky.

They basically gave everyone a big FU (as in fun) to people who bought right before the press release. Funny story I was actually yelled at by an apple rep when I called and asked about Tiger on April 1st (before the official press release). That person was either having a bad day or just taking a /. ing.

I was told on the phone by an apple rep that this is a common practice at apple. Upgrades to products are never spoken about until they are out or are in the next 30 days in Tiger’s case. So sadly I was wrong you cannot call and ask apple when the next upgrade to iBook’s will be.

I guess your best bet now is to check out http://www.macrumors.com/

Just in addition to my story I blame all the lamer’s that posted lame story’s on lame Slashdot.org for my lame apple headaches. If I wasn’t so confused as to which story was real and which wasn’t I would have actually canceled my order and waited until tiger was officialy out or at least until the press release was out. Then again maybe not… I still blame them and their kind.

I think that’s enough ranting for one day…
