Most controller manuals should state if this is possible. With my controller the drives are just mirror images so either can be plugged somewhere else and used fine.
 
You often have to hook it up to an identical model, though in some cases you can get away with just the same manufacturer. That said, I have seen low-end controllers that seem to be unable to "rescue" an array, and if you try and reconstruct it you just en up creating a new array (ie: wiping out what you have).

The best thing to do would be to create an array, change to a different set of drives, create a new array on the second set of drives, then swap the old drives back and try to rescue the first array.
