im not gonna read the whole post, but i totally agree with the article. All everyone revolves around today is sex, violence, money...life has turned into one big popularity contest, good example? look at myspace.com, arrogance and vanity at its finest. Im stuck at the community college, i spend more time watching someone doesnt rip me off, and when im not doing that, im telling the "homies" im not buying their drugs, no i dont have a light...cant tell you how many times a fight almost broke out, because my girlfriend wasnt interested in whoever was trying to get her phone number...lets see, a guy randomly walks to a girl to hookup later...OBVIOUSLY theyre not interested in personality.

Ive had some really low life girls ask me for my number..never met em in my life..of corse none of them talk in a way you can understand, its all "yo yo, wuss yo digits hot stuff!!!111one111"(if speech could be seen itd look like that lol) , after ive told them in a polite manner that im not interested, or i have a girlfriend...some CONTINUE. Know what i do? i give them a phone number that ends in 911. For those of you not so phone savy, if you put 911 anywhere it dials 911 emergency. Cant say ive met someone SMART enough to figure that out lol

GTA3/4/5 whatever, sure, theyre gross games. I HATE how parents blame games for their chilids actions. Kid is 12 years old, gets violent after a game, lets see here A. he shouldnt have it, B. he should have been taught right from wrong.

Ive played and beaten GTA3. yea i laugh at just how outrageous it is, and just walk away. i havent played it in about 2 years, i dont really care. I get into enemy territory just to have alittle fun on the weekends, since college is such a PITA. Most people are OBSESSED. Games now, its like "lets see how crazy/outrageous we can get, just to say we did"

Reminds me of south park, yea its funny, to those who understand it. Sometimes i like the things they pick on and make fun of, because no one else has the guts to an opinion anymore.

Or howard stern, anyone care to comment on this nut? hes got my vote for probably the biggest low life of all.

Personally, i live under a rock. I dont watch TV, i hardly play video games, i dont give a crap about the news. I cant see to read the newspaper, but im not missing anything, just more results on who shot who.

This is a sad society, i was trying for so long to come up with a way to make a peice of art for Deviant art that just makes those guilty of such de-evoloution feel stupid and bad just by looking at it, but i cant come up with anything. Any suggestions?

And the strong language, IMO, is to make a point. Would you have read it as closely and all the way through without those words?

I feel for you and what you have been through. Please do not live under a rock. The media can be blamed for many things but ultimately individuals are rsponsible for their own behavior. In a society where people at the highest levels show no respect for morality and the rule of law the people down below also loose their respect for the same. Art is a wonderful way of expressing yourself and sending a message to the world. In these times one must be an artist or a revolutionary. You have chosen well. Good luck.

I didn't read this whole thread, nor do I want to. I have better things to do with my limited time. I will say this though: No one forces you to view or play any of these movies, games, etc. They all have ratings, though everyone seems to overlook the fact that there are ratings on games..

Anyway, if I find something offensive, I don't view it, listen to it, watch it, or read it, and no one is forcing me too. Example- I find bigots offensive and stupid, so you wouldn't find me reading a White Power website and then bitching about what they are saying. They can write what they want, they have that right, and I have the right not to read it.

I don't feel this is a sad society because of the freedoms we have. It would be a sad society if we didn't have these freedoms. The only sad thing about our society is the insane amount of power watchdog groups have and how they fight to take our freedoms away.

Finally, for those who complain about the rules here, and how they are censored- it's a privately owned forum, the moderators/owners have the final say as to what goes on here. If someone walked into your home, and started doing something you didn't want, you would kick them out, right? And you can, CAUSE IT IS YOUR HOME. Same thing here- this is their home, we are guests, and we play by their rules. If you don't like it- leave. Simple, right?

There is something about this argument/discussion I do not understand perhaps someone here can explain.

GTA is a game of violence and crime which in real life would be severely frowned upon in any country I can think of!
But there was not a problem with the game until some sex scenes where unlocked
now as far as I know no country has ever tried to ban sex (it would not last long if it did so successfully)

Also in the UK the minimum age for consent is 16 and although you can join the army at 16 you will not see active service and be in a position to kill someone until you are 18

So to have sex legally 16 to kill legally 18 and yet the rating of the game was increased because of the sex but not the violence????????

So you can show violent and murderous criminal activities and even glamorise them, but even suggest sex, legal or not, and there is an issue???????????

I can see that the scenes in question where not necessarily wholesome but i cannot see the violence being described as such either , except by the most twisted of minds

Now in my opinion violence is worse than sex in films, games ,etc.. (and violent sex is a greater evil than the sum of the 2) but i still like violent movies and games
I consider myself to be mature adult that can distinguish between reality and fantasy who knows right from wrong but I admit I feel confused by the maelstrom that the hot coffee mod created

However, the idea of returning to the previous era's of censorship are somewhat scary.
If you look into the history of censorship it has only driven pornography underground and caused there to be no protection for those in the industry
The Victorian era in England was a prime example, even a woman's ankle was considered brazen if seen in public, yet the porn industry thrived and women where exploited.
If you try to stop people doing what they really want they will find ways round it, need I mention the US's attempts at prohibition.

Madskillzaman- didn't say you did :) btw, who is that in your avatar?

Andyweird- Between sex and violence, sex is treated as the "greater evil" here in the U.S.

JML - I see that but I do not understand why

stop all violence=peacefull society
stop all sex=no one will be around after 70 years or so and there will be no society

How can sex be worse than violence?
Can you explain or should I add it to my list of unanswerable questions like "how did life begin" and "what came before the big bang"

I am not trying to be awkward but I honestly do not understand this viewpoint.
In some respects it is similar to Victorian England where bare knuckle fist fights where popular and legal and there was explosion of underground pornography that was officially frowned upon but was so popular it is still easy to get hold of today nearly 100 years later (another example of governments trying to restrict the activities of its population that failed)

I agree that there should be guidance to protect children, which we seem to have plenty of (the fact that parents seem to ignore this is irrelevant, it is there) but to say you need to be older to see a sex scene between consenting adults, than to see someone committing mass murder, armed robbery and various other violent crimes strikes me as ludicrous.

Let me put it another way
If you come round to my house with another consenting adult and got amorous I might not be best pleased but I would not be distressed.
If you come to my house and even hint at waving a gun around I will freak (and I certainly wont invite you back) and robbery murder etc.. are definitely out if you want to continue talking politely

Andywierd, I agree with you 100%. You must understand that the US grew with Puritanism at the center of it's core beliefs. This has only been made worse by the recent dominance of political and religious extremist.

Thanks rseven I think I understand
I might get in trouble for saying this but one word explains all (evils)

RELIGION

but that is a discusion for another thread if not another forum

I didn't say I believe in or understand it, it's just the way it is here. I think you hit upon the answer in your last post...but I won't go there ;)

stop all violence=peacefull society
stop all sex=no one will be around after 70 years or so and there will be no society
one reason I can see for the current rule is that watch sex makes someone want to do the same. and for the stability of the family it is probably better for sex to be a carefully thoughtout thing instead of a passionate thing. (note the number of single mothers, then note the care that their children recieves)

Violence, on the other hand is something that you watch, say "thats cool" and then never consider doing it in real life. Hence violence in movies will not dent the society.

Actually, there have been many studies that link watching violence to violent behavior. The act of watching conditions us to be more accepting of violent acts. This has even been shown to be true with the silly violence of children's cartoons. Mixing sex with violence is an even more toxic brew.

"Remember, these folks are demanding the right to poop on your floor and encouraging others to do the same."

don't let them poop on you lol!

Ho-Hum, So much content to reply to all squeezed into one thread, where to start....

First off I suppose I will lay the groundwork for seeing things from my point of view. As our understanding of the physical properties of the world around increases, technology we have progresses at a directly related rate, and this appears to be relatively exponential. Technology promotes easier interaction with the world around us, including the people around us. However, the human mind isn't uniform in its psychological growth and each person will have their own perception of themselves and the world they live in.
*Begins the bombardment of opinions here* The problem as I see it is that we're being outpaced in that we as a race neither evolve physically as fast as technology nor able to analyze and actually "think" about all the information that basically streams into our lives at a constantly growing rate. An example was used of hackers, p2pers, and spammers on the front-page. These are mostly internet related problems, with the exception of good ol' spam which has been around in one form or another since the time the first human tried to sell another human something. The internet is basically the collective gathering of the thoughts of everyone connected to it. What we think, we type and share. The thing is, this leads to forum trolls, spammers, and other such people because an important step is often left out: Thinking. If everyone acted as their own reasonable filter before sharing their thoughts, their would be a great deal less junk, even if not everyone actually has a developed reasoning process, simply because they would have to stop and try to think it through.
Next thing I would love to address is the wonton judgment of other people going on. "Right", "Wrong","Good", "Bad", and all variations, branches and forks off from such words should be used sparingly. I saw the example of the rapper 50 cent. The beauty of rap for me is in the skill put into the rhymes, easily seen in free style in which people come up with an entire song during their performance in as little as seconds beforehand. Personally, I don't ever listen to rap, but I give credit where it is do. Having an open mind is probably one of the most important things one can have, I'd say in the top five, because you can't really understand someone until you can think like them, nor appreciate something as they do until you try while looking for what makes it appeal to them. If it won't hurt ya to try it, then you should do so and give it an honest chance. Simply pointing at something and saying, "That doesn't agree with my way thinking, so it must crap, and I seem to be surrounded by it, so I must live in a really crappy place," is what really hurts society. If you've given it an honest chance and you still come to the conclusion that its not for you, simply don't add to, encourage, or otherwise support it. A well-developed mind can be independent and decide for itself what changes to make to its own structure, and should encourage others to do the same, by providing the different types of information available, what you would do with a very detailed explanation as to why - if they ask for your thoughts - and give them the opportunity make up their own mind without judging them too harshly if they don't agree with you. :)

Thus ends my mile long rant (623 words if your counting). OT-The above is mostly why I forum lurk rather than post. Man, I'll never make it into the classifieds section.
