The only reason to buy intel now is basically if you don't like AMD. Everyone in my dorm building who built their own computer who has a p4 wants an athlon64. Everyone who has an athlon xp wants an athlon64. Everyone who has an athlon64 wants a faster athlon64.
I don't agree with Sentential's argument about RAM. You can buy 2 x 1GB DDR sticks for not much more than DDR2 sticks, not $100 to $150 more. $300 will buy you pretty much the best DDR1 2 x 1GB memory.
Also, considering that windows vista is well over a year from even being introduced, let alone mainstream, which may take well over a year or more, don't let any future windows influence your decision.
