Put the barbed components in the freezer for a minute if you still can't get it on using the hot water method (probably won't work with plastic barbs). It's amazing what you can wrap flexible tubing around.
 
it's all about the side to side while squeezing the tubing just right method(wow that sounded wrong) imo.. unless of course you're trying to stretch smaller tubing over a larger barb.. then it's pot of boiling water + a pair of scissors used backwards(inside the tubing to stretch it) ftw.
 
I just redid my system with Tygon and I could get the tubing on really easy but getting it off is another story. It actually took the paint of the inlet of my Swifty cpu block.
