We celebrated my Dad's bday this evening... at which we gave him a new toaster (which he didn't want... but there was an IPod nano inside;-). As soon as the festivities were over, I rushed into the workshop with the old toaster.

I took it apart as much I as could... I ended up knocking out a LOT of rivets.

Here are some pics:

More pics coming...

What i'm using to try to get rid of the carbon stains... mr. Muscle

My families workshop... pretty nice huh?

OK... here is my question...

What should I do to remove the carbon stuff? I'm using this mr. muscle acid... which is for industrial ovens... but if that doesn't work.... what should I do?

Ok... another update, pics in a second.

Did what I could over Friday and Saturday to clean up all of the metal from the toaster for painting... some of it still needs some work, but I was able to scrub most of the crap from the interior and exterior panels. As you will see in the pics. Mr. Muscle was great!

I guess this happens to every mod at least once, but I have changed the plan for this a little.

Instead of taking my current home built machine (which my Dad paid for... and I don't want to fry) and sticking it in this toaster, I am going to build a storage server from scratch. Using some RAM that I already have, and other stuff... the specs would be the following:

Mobo (Micro ATX... for a better fit...):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16813131546

CPU:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16819112188

HD (In a mirroring RAID... so two of these):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16822144048

DVD Reading drive:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16827101666

RAM:
I already have two sticks of 256mb no namer that came with my Sony computer.... I replaced them recently with a gig of Corsair... but I can use the old ram for this...

Case:
I shouldn't have to tell you.

Comments:
I want to go for CHEAP!!! and unless you have better info... a slow cpu and mobo isn't a problem when you are only using it to run data to other systems.
I would love to put an AMD in this... but I didn't even try looking for a good setup... because I know nothing about AMD... so if someone wants to find an AMD setup with onboard video... SATA RAID, and in Micro ATX... I would be grateful.

Once I add the cool case mod stuff... and a HS (like an xp-90 or a 90mm Zalman) it should level out at about 400-425 bucks... the less the better.

Ok.. pics in a minute...

QUESTION!

What color should I paint it?

I was thinking of an all chrome look...

Jdrake90

Looking good man I have been watching this for a while now. In regards to paint. Chrome paint is a real pain to deal with and harder still to get a really good finish. So unless you plan on sending out your toaster to get it dipped I would really recommend a different color.

Ok... pic updates...

Disclaimer:
Keep in mind that I am a noob, so if this should look better... tell me please.

41:
My dog... had to throw that in!

42:
Back panel of case... this is what you see if you look inside toaster

44:
Crumb tray... used to be almost completely brown... a little acid did the trick

45:
The glass front... this is the original shade and transparenc, (the toaster came with that smokey look...)

46:
The outer casing top... yeah... this looks like crap, but I will sand off the rust (caused by getting it overly wet) and it should look ok... once painted... (No chrome on this EC... that would be impossible;-)

Side of outer cover... see above for disclaimer...

49:
The front... i'm working to get the rest of this paint off... I need more mr. muscle.... ran out of it.

54:
All of the little dookickies that came on the front... i'll probably right one as a fan controller or something.

51:
The interior... got rid of the carbon!

Thats all for now folks!

Yeah... making it look fried would be sweet.... just wait a minute and i'll draw a diagram so I can get reasonable ideas for this...

I like the nVidia GTX480 as a toaster - the breville has trouble breaking 20k in 3dmark06 while burning a GeForce logo in your morning toast.

Last activity was 4 years ago...

Cool mod though, with the mITX boards he coulda fit a powerful rig inside it :)

This project needs a DFI LanParty board and associated UV reactive cables.

Looking good thus far.
