What about Corsair PSUs? I read quite a good review over the Corsair CMPSU-550VX, and I'm thinking about getting that one for OCing a 45nm Intel and two 3870... Is it good enough for that?

Sorry for the late reply, but Okla got to it at least. Corsair's are awesome PSUs. I probably don't have it on the list, but the new twins in the family are taking up a "little", sarcasim, of my time. :)

The purepower line is good. I don't think the 600w version was out when I put everything together.

ok I wasn't trying burn you just trying to help get the info out there and not make myself feel bad because I might have bought a crappy psu.:D

Jiggaman,

You did a helluva job creating all this some time ago and it's nearly a full time occupation keeping it all up to date. It's much appreciated. Enjoy your family!:clap:

Thanks!! It needs some updating still. If anyone would like to help, I'll add info as it is sent to me. I really need to add the corsair units as a 'best buy' PSU cause they are awesome.

Jiggaman,

The Corsairs are easy to insert, they have all been tested by Jonny and a few by Paul johnson. They all passed with flying colors and got top awards. I'm sure Oklahoma Wolf can give a better idea where to place them on your list.

A friend of mine just bought a Corsair 700w psu running two 8800gt's and it stopped working within twenty minutes and wouldn't power back on again. When he rma'd it and got the new one in it did the exact same thing and they were both brand new.

If I had two power supplies to go out like that in the same rig, I'd be wondering if there was something over loading it or something else causing it to go out.

Just a thought.

:D :D :D

Would the Cooler Master Real Power M700 RS-700-ASAA Power Supply be able to do a job if I am looking to overclock a system with a Q9300, 8800GT. There are also 3 HDs, a software encoder TV card (TV2000XP Expert), a DVD writer and Soundblaster 24bit 7.1 Live! attached to the system (or rather will be).

I have to get a new power supply. I'm sort of using this thread as a guide but also trying to find one that I can afford. I'm disabled so. . . . I'm looking at these two at newegg.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817171025 $100.00

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817171024 $130.00

I'm sort of leaning towards the $130.00 one since it is the best deal tho a little more money.

This is what I have: Abit NF7v2.0 with a AMD Athlon XP 2500+, 1 GB of ram, three IDE 3.5 inch hard drives, 1 CD-RW drive, Nvida FX-5200 and a bunch of fans. I had a rubber band to get wrapped up in the fan on my old P/S and didn't notice it until it was to late. NOTE: I have IDE drives right now. I need the four pin power connectors for this. It's not real clear as to whether either of these P/S's has these. I think I see them in the pictures and it has something it calls peripherals. I think that is them.

Future, I may build a new rig with SATA drives and 64 bit CPUs and a new video card. Most likely use the same case if possible. Might want to keep that in mind too.

Any advice will be appreciated.

Dalek,

With some future overhead considered, here is one of your best choices:

These reviews should reinforce the the Corsair models for you:

There are better choices than many of the Coolermaster brands for the money and quality. Depending on your future needs, I would look at all the Corsair models.

I'd get this one:

$30 AR
You aren't doing anything crazy power hungry, and it doesn't look like you are a huge gamer so a future power hungry video card is out of the question. This one is nice and green too :)

Well, I do some things that are power hungry. Three hard drives that stay pretty busy. I also run foldingathome 24/7 and I use Gentoo Linux. If it is not compiling some program, folding is keeping that CPU at 100%.

I also had a 350 watt power supply before and it always ran a little low on the 5 volt rail for some reason. A little warm too. It worked fine in a old 1GHz rig tho. I try to always get at least 450 watts. Right now, I have a 550 watt A-Open P/S and it seems to do OK. I just don't know about this brand. It's just all I could find local on short notice. I think I'm addicted to my puter.

Basically, I have had two power supplies to burn out on me so far. I been lucky that no other damage has been done to the mobo and etc. Trying not to push my luck to far here. Trying to "improve" things here. I just hate that stinking rubber band got the one I had. It seemed to do very well and was really quiet.

Thanks for the info.

Even with your current rig at full tilt you are still under 350w. If you upgrade, it will just get lower.

If you want something with some more beef, this unit has a rebate now and will probably have it into your senior days.... :)

That other P/S always made me wonder why it ran funny. It worked like a charm in the slower box but didn't in my main box. I know this thing doesn't pull that much wattage wise so I just assumed something was putting a big load on that 5 volt rail or something. I just never knew what that could be. Maybe it had a weak 5 volt rail?? I know it blew pretty warm air in this box but blew cool air in the other box. Just weird.

I do like that P/S you linked too. It also has long cables and I do have a server case that is about 2 feet tall. The cable for the mobo with this temporary P/S is a bit to short for me to run it like I did the old one. I need about another 6 inches or so. Drive cables are a bit short too but they do make it. The one you linked to seems to have longer cables. That's a plus. :)

It will be a couple weeks before I can get the new one but this one is on the short list. I get my check on the 3rd.

Thanks for the link.
