Linksys WRT54G + a WRE54g if you need even more range. My WRT54g is on my top floor of my house (2nd floor) and I get good signal in my basement. I've been very happy with the range of my Linksys.

never seen a wre54g before... is it a repeater?

I would also reccommend a WRT54G. (pre-v5) I have one in my basement and my parents get a good signal in their 2nd story bedroom. I like it a lot. :)

Go linksys. Do NOT go Belkin, Cisco, D-Link, Netgear, or SMC (they're NTP spammers).
