I know that burn in was an effect of old CRTs... but I am curious, is burn in possible on modern LCDs if they are left inactive w/o motion for a long time?

Technically, no. But a pixel can become stuck, whether that results from having the same voltage put through it for extended periods of time is up in the air. I am sure it has happened to people, but it would be quite rare.
