Well I was building a computer for a friend for photo and video. I had a presler 950 3.4ghz http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16819116240 on the list until the E6300 Allendale http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819115005 came out for around the same price. Well now I am stock on a choice here. Which one is faster on stock? For now, he doesn't want to overclock, but of course I will give him some room for that. I had the Asus P5LD2 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16813131539 for the board to fit the presler 950 buget. What choice is better?

Unless you have the rev. 201G the Allendale won't work on the P5LD2. If video editing is your game I would go 950. The Netburst processors excel at encoding. You really don't have a choice unless you have the newer revision or your willing to send it back and buy a DS3 for a little more money to run an Allendale. You could also go with the 945 it is the same specs as the 950 but costs $180 and will run cooler than a B1. P5LD2+945=$297 or E6300+DS3=$378. I don't think it's worth $80 unless you plan on overclocking and getting some good ram $$$$.

Okay stock Presler 945 it is, but do you recommend a better board than the P5LD2 or not? Also where can I find out which memory at stock for now 2x1 GIG will work good with the P5LD2 or the board you recommend? Also is the stock heatsink of the Presler 945 good enough for now at stock?

p5ld2's with the current (pre rev 2.01g mobo) bios 1103 work very well with my presslers. If it has all the features you need it is a good choice. I have 3 of the rev 1.02's running 830 and 930's well. The 1103 bios improved the pressler OC'ing a lot :)

You can prolly get away with stock hsf if only running at stock, but you should get a better hsf for much OC.

If there were rev 2.01 mobos available for the same? price i would probably get one since it would allow a conroe upgrade later if needed. Not sure if there are in retail channels yet tho.

Gah! 149 for the P4LD2? It doesn't even run conroes! Get the DS3 whatever you do. It's the same price and will give you more room for future upgradeability even if you do get the pressler.

Well the p5ld2 that I am getting is the one on the link shown for the newegg version. Hope its the new version and yes I think it has all the features I need. Unless someone else recommends another better one, I will get this asus p5ld2 motherboard.

You could be right, but i only recommend based on what i have ... and i won't have a ds3 until later tonight :D

DS3 ? Are you talking about the http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813128012 board? Also about the asus board, well I was getting that to run the presler 945 not the E6300 Allendale? Okay lets do this:

Presler 945 on the P5LD2 vs the E6300 Allendale on the DS3? One or the other guys, either Presler 945 or E6300. Little difference in price, but what is better for photo and video, not really for gaming. Video editting (Adobe Premiere, etc) and photo processing (Photoshop). On another note, if I am doing only Presler, I should be okay with the P5LD2 right cause it has RAID 0/1/5/10 Matrix RAID.

I ordered the E6400 (well I ordered the E6300... they're sending me an E6400) and I'm going to get a DS3. The DS3 will tap dance all over the 945 and P5LD2. The 945 has 4mb of ram (I think...) but the Core 2 Duo is simply more efficient and will run at 3.2ghz without even trying on a DS3. 4 ghz with a little effort. And even at it's stock speed it might be faster than the 945.

Plus I feel the need again to emphasize expandability. The Core 2 Duo boards are all supposed to be compatible with Kentsfield (the quad core). You might actually make some money off one one of your films and need to upgrade. WHO KNOWS!

I'm using the board for video editing myself (http://www.takeonparis.com) and I wouldn't imagine getting anything other than a Core 2 Duo at this point (I had the choice today as a matter of fact.)

Okay I am buying the e6300 with the ds3, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819115005 and http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813128012, but what two gig memory kit works great with that board?

how much are you willing to devote to the ram in $$?

other wise i would say looke at some g.skills dd2-800 4-4-4-12 or the corsair 6400-c4's. while not on neweggs site are Team ddr-667 4-4-4-12 over at tankguys.biz good price too.

I can't comment on thie use of either allendale or pressler for video editing - others have earlier in the thread

The workload i optimize for is folding. The 6400 and 930 comparison for me is:
930 at 4.2 ghz = 1460 ppd vs 6400 (NOT 6300) at 3.48 ghz - 1510 ppd. Same mem (crucial pc2-8000) on both.

The 6400 has not been run on either mobo we are discussing here. The 930 has been run on the p5ld2 rev 1.02 at that oc.

I will be testing the 6400 on the ds3 tonight. Not sure if/when i will try a 930 on it tho.

Remember he is going to be using this computer for video editing. Netburst is faster than CD2 at encoding. He says it will not be a gamer. At stock clocks I seriously dought a stock 1.83Ghz E6300 could out perform a 3.4Ghz 945 at video editing.

This feels like playing ball here, one toss that way, one toss this way. Okay again, without overclocking yet, STOCK, is it better to go with new intel version E6300 and not the presler 945? The E6300 in charts has about 1 to 2 seconds better on video than the 950\960. So I think that for future purposes, the E6300 is better right now, give or take the extra $ for it. I think newer is better, though the E6300 runs cooler than the presler 945 and is less energy hungry. Don't know, but the E6300 is probably a good overclocker. Also this system is not for me, I am building it for a friend. He has not worked with video yet, only photo, but wants the system ready for video editting.

As far as memory goes I would stay away from PQI. I have had nothing but bad luck with them on non performance PC's that I've built. Come to think of it I've never heard anyone say good things about them.

If all else is equal, the allendale will consume less power and produce less heat. IF they are close performance wize for what you want to use them for, then i would definitiely go allendale.

Yeah thats where I saw the reviews, in Anandtech. Okay final rig, E6300 with the Gigabyte DS3. Now I need the memory to go with it....
