I have one of each, both 128mb cards. I haven't really pushed either card clock-wise, just mild "auto" overclocks via the nvidia drivers.

I also forgot to benchmark and record results for the 6600gt before I pulled it to install the 6800nu. The 6800 will fully unlock via rivatuner, all masked pipelines and shaders.

I'm hoping I can get an answer here as to which is the better card for the majority of gaming situations, instead of me having to benchmark both (and the attendant ripping my machine apart, which i'm just tired of doing right now.) The 6600gt has much higher memory speeds, but the 6800 has a more robust gpu, does it not? Which should I use?

At stock, the 6800nu is just slightly better than the 6600GT, but not by much. But- an unlocked 6800NU is almost equivalent to a 6800GT, thus making it quite a bit faster than a 6600GT. I'd definitly stick with the unlocked 6800nu

I would stick with the unlocked 6800, because when unlocked that card is almost twice as fast as the 6600gt.

I say the 6600Gt because it overclocks like a beast. Ive got my vmodded running @ 600/1200 with no problems, stock cooling.

An unlocked 6800NU is substantially more powerful than a 6600GT. I would definitely go with the NU.

yes if you can get it fully unlocked ur good... but i had my 6600gt AGP, mind you, clocked to 626/1325 grabing 10049 in 3dmark03 / 4062 in 3dmark05 / 1626 in 3dmark06....and that was with a northwood 3.0C at 3.0ghz... Thoes scores were about 20% better in ever benchmark compared to my friends stock 6800nu PCIE 256mb... just so you can compare results....

BUT in the realworld games like bf2 and whatnot his 6800nu produced a more constant frame rate because his card had more memory and bandwidth. i say go with the 6800nu and unlock it.

Even at this clocks a 6600gt is no match to a unlocked 6800

And how many have you killed? I know it is at least 2.

I would stick with the 6800nu, however in some cases the memory discrepency will allow the 6600gt to take the performance edge but not frequently enough to justify using it over the unlocked 6800nu. Also while the core speed and units may be the same as the 6800gt, the performance of a 6800nu is not as close to a 6800gt as it used to be. This is because newer games take advantage of the larger amount of faster memory on the 6800gt, compaired to the ddr1 on the 6800nu, more so then when they where nvidias flagship core.

ahem, key words here.. "Clocked to 626/1325" and "Stock 6800", that's really fair.. But your scores aren't that high, my 6800le @ nu pulled in 4500 in 3dmark 05, and well over 11K in 3dm03. The 6800nu is a lot better, especially unlocked to 16 pipes. So not only does the 6800 beat thte 6600 in the gaming world, it also beats it in the benching world. Your point = invalid. I'm also wondering why your emphasising the cpu you used? I get the same scores when i used that card in a Duron 1.6ghz... 3dmark is quite gpu intensive, very little cpu... so again, your point = invalid.

....4.

But this was due to faults other than cooling or burnt cores. I would go no higer than 55C idle and 60 load @ 600/1200.

Another vote for the unlocked 68 hands down, In real gaming situations the 8 extra pixel pipelines make a big difference. I still have a 68nu that I keep as a backup card for the wifes Agp system, It unlocked fully and scored 12,200 in 3d03. We currently have a 68gt in her computer and honestly the difference between the 68gt and 68nu is not that noticeable.

compared to my friends 6800nu pcie 256mb stock is pretty much equal to my 6600gt AGP 128mb stock... but this is not what this thread is about.... i said that in the benchmarks the 6600gt scored better.. but in realworld it was no match to a stock 6800nu... HENCE the reason i said stick with the 6800nu.

AND ALSO if 3dmark is soo gpu intensive and that it doesnt depend on the cpu.. then tell my why my 7900gt KO 512mb scored 9400 in an X2 4400 system and 10049 in my C2D system in 3dmark05? and when i overclocked my c2d to 3ghz i gained another 200 pts... all with the same card at the same settings....

ALSO when i was comparing the cpu clock speeds... this is comparing my 3.0ghz Northwood with ddr 400 memory to a 3.4ghz prescott with DDR2 533

because when your video card, high end like the 7900, NEEDS more bandwidth then you get a boost from the CPU, the 6800 and 6600gt and not very HIGH end, they are pretty decent mid-range parts. So now your talking stock vs stock? the 6600gt cant beat the 6800nu by much, my buddies i do believe gets 3500 stock with a 6600gt? 3400 for my agp buddy, and i think thats what the 6800nu gets, round 3400. So the 6600gt isn't pwning the 6800nu in either realm, real world gaming, or synthetic benchmarking. If he wanted to do either, 6800nu FTW even if it wasn't unlock, oc'd it will beat that 6600GT.
