Is there a 64-bit Linux Live CD out there that will work on my Core2Duo/965 setup that will also let me mount a windows file share? I want to try the new Folding SMP client which requires 64-bit linux, and I want to use a file share on another system to hold the client files so I don't have to install it to the HDD of the system its running on.

Most X86-64 live CDs should ship with an SMP-enabled kernel. I would try Knoppix or Ubuntu 64 bit versions. I'm pretty sure that Knoppix comes with a samba client for accessing windows shares.

You might also want to consider using a USB flash drive as a persistent home for Knoppix, a lot simpler than the smb share imho.

This whole afternoon I've been trying to setup an x86-64 distro to do SMP folding on my DS3 / C2D machine, with no luck at all. Ubuntu 5.04, 6.06, Kubuntu 6.06 and SUSE 10.1 will not install. Ubuntu/Kubuntu installs fine on all of my AMD-64 machines.

As the above-named distro's start installation they get as far as keyboard layout, then indicate that there is no compatable cd-rom present from which to install. I tried 3 different cd-rom's...to no avail.

I think it's just the IDE controller on the p965 chipset that these distros hate. I was able to run an older 32 bit live distro successfully, but that won't help with the 64 bit SMP folding project.
