Update:
It's sitting at "scanning files" with the progress bar at 0%, and neither the HDD nor DVD lights are flashing. Furthermore, the system is nonresponsive, the mouse moves but if I click on a menu it does nothing. I verified the disc using the utility provided with kubuntu before trying to install, and it was fine. Help!

My laptop is currently running the kubuntu install behind me.
The laptop's specs:
AMD turion64 2ghz (not dual core)
1gig ddr2
ATI radeon xpress 1100 graphics
dual-layer dvd+/-rw drive
60gb hdd

How do I get ATI graphics drivers, with 3d acceleration and power-management options?
Do I need any drivers to get the dvd+/-rw drive working completely?
What is the air-speed-velocity of a swallow?

Later on I'll want to get WINE+WoW working.

Edit: oh, and this is kubuntu for AMD64.
