Do not install PeoplePC on your computer!

Man, I installed this piece of garbage on my computer last night and it totally messed up my computer, wouldnt connect to the internet and has no install features. I had to go into the registry in safe mode and get rid of all traces of PeoplePC and then I was finally able to delete the folder out of Program Files. If you try to do that in regular mode it heals itself and reinstalls just as fast as you can hit the delete button. This program is worse than any case of AOL that I have ever encountered.

I installed it because I am on DirecWay right now and I pay $60 a month for very limited broadband. I figured it would be a good way to save $50 a month in internet bills. All I pretty much do anymore is check this site and Ebay and a Hunting and Dirt bike forums. You dont need broadband for that.

Best thing to do is look for a dial up service that lets you directly log in by setting UN/PW thropough your modem control. That way you dont need any of their software.

MS used to let you do that back when they had internet service.. .I beleive I saw something about AOL actually has a trick that you can use also, although I never tried it.

PeoplePC is insidious. You can connect to them without thier 'smart dialer' software. Just go through the internet connection wizard, put in all your info as needed, and just remember which number it chose for you in the 'smart dialer', put that in, and voila... you can connect to peoplepc without the hassle of thier software.

The negatives of peoplepc? Too many to count. Too bad you don't live here in WV. I work at an ISP that covers 2 "isp"'s. KVI and Brier. KVI is 16.95 a month, Brier is 9.95 a month. None of the BS you get with AOL or PeoplePC.

Hell... we even troubleshoot non-internet related problems...

Looks to be in the same vein as the SBC-Yahoo DSL crap. It somehow manages to completely destroy your .Net framework and is a sure recepie for BSOD's. Avoid like the plague.

thats the main reason when i get an install disk with something ...it goes in the trash can as soon as i manually connect...

cox cable use to have software that would lock up your system if you ran norton. auto detected a virus and BAM ... the nightmare began

You can use PeoplePC w/o the smart dialer if you know what you are doing. Find an early (v1.0) version of DialGuard and run it before the smart-dialer dials. It will give the true login name and password, from which you can make a regular DUN connection.

I have been using it this way for 3 or 4 years at home, where dial-up is my only option.

BTW, I never have had a problem using the Smart Dialer. I just think it sucks.
Gave up messing with computers for a bit. It's just my Macbook and my iPhone. :)

    Poop!
