I've always wondered why we haven't had more to choose from in terms of American style RPG's that really place a powerful emphasis on writing (story, dialogue, characters.) Basically, an interactive book.

We've seen more of it from Japanese RPG's like Final Fantasy...although, I wouldn't say that they've taken the idea all the way, either.

We're certainly capable of making the games, and there's a wide array of good Fantasy style writers. Also, the film industry shows ample talent for writing dialogue, voice acting, etc. An ambitious company could even just take a Neverwinter Nights engine or an Elder Scrolls engine and just go to town with writers, artists, voice actors, and game designers.

Instead, we see lots of "sandbox" types of American RPG's....which are great, I like them a whole bunch, but I want both. :D I have to wonder if people just don't read books anymore and don't realize what they are missing.

Anyway...maybe you won't like Oblivion...or, maybe you'd warm up to it eventually. If you don't, I would suggest Star Wars: Knights of the Old Repubic. It is completely different, and is far, far easier to get into....and also very good. Neverwinter Nights is good to try and has a more typical Fantasy genre than Star Wars, although I don't think the single player is as finely done as SW:KOTOR. It does however have multiplayer and role-playing value beyond the single player compaign along with custom content.

Omsion, GREAT links, Sucks that some of the cool mods are only offered at http://www.tessource.net/ which requires a pay to download account for files over 2Mb
When did this start? I'd have to say that's pretty annoying.
Too bad gamespy screwed over the old Morrowind Summit and made it an ugly-looking Planet site - their awesome self-made mod database (with tons of searching and sorting options) had to be converted to the standard, crappy Planet database which can't search for it's life - probably why it isn't the must-upload to site that it was in Morrowind =(

http://www.tessource.net/files/file.php?id=6422
http://www.tessource.net/files/file.php?id=4754
http://tessource.net/files/file.php?id=5720

All I had to do was register. No payment required.

And the Elder Scrolls equation is actually:

Daggerfall > ((Morrowind+Oblivion)/2)

Ok I need to read more, I did a scan of the register page and saw a text box with a month fee and left, didn't see that it was optional, wow, I feel noobish

Morrowind have the same amount of user Mods as Oblivion, all I am finding tonight are really interesting user mods, and user created "bug" fixes. Morrowind have that kinda following?

Morrowind has an immense following. I would even say there are more mods for Morrowind than for Oblivion, but that's also because Oblivion incorporated some of the things that modders added to Morrowind. I play a lot of Oblivion, but I am already thinking that maybe, just maybe, Morrowind had more detail - graphics, physics and animated vegetation aside. :)

Tell me about Neverwinter nights

Neverwinter Nights is also a PC RPG based on Dungeons and Dragons 3rd edition rules. It's a top down game, graphics wise, with plenty of story, also plenty of mods (though not with the freedom and capability of Oblivion) but much more of a "rail" game where you move from one area to the next and you can't move between chapters.

If you just want fast and fun action RPGing, I would recommend the German sleeper hit "Sacred" which turned up during a particularily slow RPG year and plucked quite a few "RPG of the Year!" prices. It's hardly a story-based epic RPG, but it has an item system that is completely out of this world. Weapons and armor pieces can have oodles of abilities AND sockets into which you can set any ordinary piece of jewelery - amulets or rings - and your character can use four rings and one amulet in addition to those socketed.

It's a bit brainless but it has a huge free-movement world, an amazing amount of item combinations and some good honest goblin-slaughtery. :)

This is incorrect. You only need to register. The site IS bleeding money however, and thankfully accepts DONATIONS - from anyone. :) You do not have to pay to download. The registration process is most likely there to avoid seeping too much bandwidth (= money) from the site.

By plenty of mods, he means plenty of mods (oh yeah, in NWN, mods are mostly a self-contained story rather than a modification of the game). In my bookmarks, I have subfolders - under "NWN\Modules\Get ASAP\Get More\" ASAP :D, I have 10 highly regarded modules (15 if you don't count those in series seperatly) listed that I have yet to play, each that would probably can take 10-20 hours to finish each.
NWN2, as it's new, does not have any lengthy modules out yet, although there are quite a few coming down the pipes from some of the more famous NWN authors.
