Just when I was going to give up on PC Gaming, I see this add on a site for a free 10 day trial in World of Warcraft. So I decide to try it out and 5 day later I'm hooked. I have been speculating for some time now if I should buy this game or not, cause I played EQ2 & Guild Wars, but it didn't appeal to me that much. So my reaction to WoW was "Just another MMO that people are exaggerating about".

Turns out I was wrong :D

I never had so much fun playing a PC game till now. I'm going out today to buy a retail copy so I can take more advantages of the game that trial account doesn't offer.

Right now I'm lv16 Mage and still learning about the game, so if you have any tips for the WoW noob please let me know

Atleast you found something you liked, WoW bored me after awhile, too repetitive and not much thought is needed.

Noob advice, GET OUT WHILE YOU STILL CAN!!

Cool & welcome to the club :) been playing since beta...working on my 3rd character, got my lock to 59 1/2 & I have 2 70 Druids (1 Feral & 1 Balance), also have a 30 Rogue & a Draenei Shaman I'm also working on.

So what server you on? Ally or Horde? All my characters are Ally, I do have 1 horde and I just can't bring myself to play it much, just don't like the horde area's much, BElf starting area is cool an all but the rest I'm not to keen on plus never really liked the horde side...

But yeah I love the game & am hooked...and finally got my woman hooked on it too back in december :) she's got a lvl 59 Mage & a 40 Rogue...though she hates her mage but I'm pushing her to continue lvl'ing her to at least 65 so I can have a portal Biatch to portal my lazy arse around.lol

I'm on Ally right now :)

Ok here some noob questions :D

So if you create another character, does your old one get deleted or can you keep them both?

Is mage a good starting character for a noob?

Gross...ally...lol

You can have up to 6 characters per server.

I played for about 2 months until I got tired of it. Like said before, it's too repetitive and for the most part requires no skill. If you're a higher level than the next guy, chances are you'll win. I had a level 38 gnome warlock and a level 20 night elf rogue. There were a few lucky people who got a lot of free stuff from me when I emptied and deleted the characters. I just walked around Darnassus and found people at random.

I still have friends that play it, I just can't get into it anymore.

This is exactly what happened to me, but I got to 62 first...lol

WoW really is awesome when you first start. I remember how cool it felt playing it for the first time. Everything looks so incredible. I was like, woa siege tanks! I want to drive one of those mothers! Ahh... ignorant bliss fades so quickly.

Enjoy as much as you can for as long as you can. All the classes are pretty fun, except maybe priest lol. Mage is solid. Make sure you get a good idea what talent line to take. Fire is great for leveling. Ice can be great around mid 30's for a respec where you can get enough talents to do lots of crit and aoe damage. Arcane I found best as the secondary talent after you get most of the fire or ice talents you want. They scale well with player skill and equipment. Do good in pvp and in raids, nothing wrong with them.

I'm not looking for a game to play for the next 2 years or so. I just need something that will hold me out for the next few months and WoW seems like a winner.

It should hold you for a few months, after that it seems like it is extremely repetitive.

Ok... this is what you need to do...

1. Stop playing WOW..

2. Go outside with a GF/Wife or go pickup a woman and enjoy....

WOW is the source of all evil in the universe... I know because I leveled two characters to 70

Sold my account on Craigslist.org less then 48 hours ago. Feels good to have that monkey off my back. I suggest you do the same, save yourself the trouble. Trust me.

It's not about self-control, its about living a healthy lifestyle. I admit I have an addictive personality, and by design, WoW was created for people with that short coming. They know it, I know it, and some of you know it.

Get out before any more damage is done.

it is definitely wasy to lose huge chunks of time to WoW. I played beta but I refused to buy the game as I thought it was purposterous to charge monthly to play a game that I had already bought in the store. Then, I got out of college and got bored at night since I don't liek most of what's on tv, so my friend convinced me to buy the game. I've been pretty good about only playing a few hours a week so it doesn't eat in to my work/social life.

I do go thru phases tho, where it seems like all I do in my free time is play WoW, but I do have a gf that yells at me for spending so much time in the game, so those phases don't last long.

I'd suggest finding a leveling guide just to help you plan out what quests to do and to help lead you thru the world. Your first time playing you want to experience it all, but I know that I enjoy not having to guess where things are and in what order to do things so I'm not wasting my time running around.

a couple good websites I've found are http://www.goblinworkshop.com and http://wow.gamepressure.com and you can also search around on google for horde leveling guides, alliance leveling guides, warlock leveling guides, leatherworking leveling guides, etc.

Hmm...well, we'll see how this "few months" thing goes. :D

Anyway... All three of the Mage talent trees are very good.

I recommend Frost spec starting out. It offers the most utility and survivability. It's the most popular spec and is the easiest to successfully play by yourself.

My personal favorite is Arcane. The 41 point talent, Slow, is incredible. It effectively cripples any class, some more than others, and is instant cast with no cooldown. Arcane Missles and Arcane Blast become very powerful and easy to use. Also, there's the threat reduction that can allow you to do more damage in a group without pulling aggro. Most people aren't much into Arcane, though.

If you like Mage, you might also like Warlock. The key is to NOT try to play them like a mage...you end up with a cruddy Mage that has a minion. Affliction spec is pretty wild...done certain ways, you end up with several DoT's (damage over time) that are instant cast, instant fears, ability to take mana from your pet, ability to take mana from your life, healthstone to instantly give life back, soul stone to instantly ressurect yourself or someone else from dead, an array of useful minions... In fact, it can even become sorta boring in a way because it's so easy kill things/people. Monsters and players alike run around helplessly feared while simultaneously dying from Curse of Agony, Corruption, Siphon Life, and Death Coil.

Noob advice: Stop while you still can!

WoW is extremely addictive. If you are only planning on playing for a few months and you think you have the discipline to stop, you should be fine. You have been warned!

Mages are pretty solid. I would suggest looking up some talent builds now and plan out what you're going to do. Find a good leveling build and it can really make it go faster.

Check out www.thottbot.com and wow.allakhazam.com

Both of those sites have information on almost all of the items in the game as well as all of the quests. You can look up a quest and see exactly where you have to go and what you have to do. (Definitely get a coordinates addon too).

Last piece of advice:
Reroll a horde character :p

Jame's Alliance Leveling Guide, on wow-pro.com, was by far the best I ever used when I was leveling 30-60. Step-by-step doesn't even begin to describe how extensive the guides are. And you will level fast!
