most of the time as long as the person who it is made out to signs the check it will work.
It's hard to look at it like a learning experence.

He can sign the check over to you.

Pretty much he endorses it. Deposit the check, let it clear in your bank.

Since it is a third party check now. You are going to have to use your bank, his or the drafting account's instituion.

Word of advice. Might want to verify this, as it might not be allowed with the account type or bank. I know my bank allows it. Since I have done it before with family.

can't he just go with you to cash it?

Anyways, my bank never asks me for ID when I cash checks, so I don't see why you couldn't cash his. There's no way they don't know it's you. If you're depositing it, though, they might inquirer as to why there are 2 different names.

If the check is signed by him, you can cash it for him. Just bring him along to your financial institution just in case but it will work.

I cash checks for people pretty often. Around here at least as long as they have signed it my bank has no problem cashing it.

As all the informed members have said, he can simply sign it and you then can cash it without him.

Yeah, I used to do this for my dad back in the day when times were tighter. I think I might've been 11 years old at the time, and we owed the bank money. He was so worried that they'd take it right off of his paycheque that he'd give it to me for me to cash.

It's funny having an 11 year old walking out of the bank with almost $1000 in his hands

@ most of the banks I have tried this Royal , CIBC , TD , Credit Union . I never had a problem cashing a check if I put in in the ATM but if I tryed cashing it @ the teller they would never do it unless we are both on the account . No idea why but banks have all kinds of messed up rules.

You always get in trouble, don't ya?

As for the check, I know that I can cash my parents checks and that they can cash my checks. But thats as far as I went.

Technically, I'm fairly certain this is what they're supposed to do. The fact that most banks will not ask for your ID is the reason most of you can do it.

Do you not know the definition of "endorsing"? The only person who thought otherwise was in canada where perhaps they have different regulations. Regardless of checking ID you should be fine cashing it. Perhaps since it is a check they can institute hold times to make sure it clears and require you to deposit it rather then cash it. Money is still yours either way.
