Cool, I get to have the first post here :D

Just wondering if anyone can tell me how high a wattage or VA of a UPS would be good for a 431 Enermax PSU and a 17" monitor.

it all depends on how long you want your compute to stay on after power loss

All I really need is about 5 minutes to save stuff and shutdown. But I thought there was a minimum rating just to keep up with your power demands. Of course I would get higher than the minimum, but it would be nice to know where to start.

I spoke with out UPS guru here at work and he recommended a 1Kva unit. Keep in mind that he errs on the side of reliability whenever possible. He stressed the importance of getting a quality brand like APC or equivalent.
