You're going to have SOOOO much fun if you make one. We built a 6ft one in my physics class in high school. Then we took it out to the field and had to make distance calculations and hit targets. Ahh, brings back great memories.

Everyone wants to be good at something. It beats being good at nothing.
Because the only other conceivable use for a golf ball also involves spending hundreds of dollars and making it travel a really, really long distance?
I dont want to go off-topic with his thread. I understand both perspectives presented it's just that I don't see the usefulness of trebuchets in general. Both of you make valid arguements there is just a disagreement in opinion.

Listen to them it might be fun.

I'm going to wait and buy a kit next month. I've tried to build some lego strut's that were fine, however the a frames were missalinged and didn't work right. It also broke apart with any real testing.

dont buy a kit.. I really do recommend you actually learn about them by making one yourself first. doesnt even have to be a big one, just maybe one about 3 ft tall or so.

    I agree.

And I strongly recommend you check out the episode of Nova I posted about earlier. They actually use small models (filmed in slow motion while hurling) to demonstrate some of the basic concepts. With nothing more than a bit of imitation/observation you could slap together something quite easily.

And another labor-saving step you can try: If you're looking to build a wheeled version, you might be able to skip a step. Assuming you have a flat bed for the frame, forget about making/attaching wheels and simply set the whole thing on some dowels. We are actually considering this as a design possibility for a larger treb (picture large Egyptian stone blocks rolling about).

My sig is referring to my brother, who also frequents these boards, big guy. Such an egocentric world we live in.

As for you, i suggest you don't threaten me. I know there is a history there with you. I also recommend you stop posting messages directed towards me, i'll do the same in regards to you.

So how about them trebuchets? Instead of getting yet another one of Derek's threads closed by being either angsty and emo or sarcastic and flaming (depending on the person posting in here), why don't we stick with the topic of the thread. That topic is, in this case, trebuchets.

From this point on, blatant off-topic posting in all discussion area threads will result in an immediate 2 week ban from all discussion areas. Repeat offenders will be permanently banned from all discussion areas.

I'm going to request this section be renamed General Daycare.

    EDIT:

    NO ONE is exempt.
