nVidia drivers + 8600 = No X server

install the latest driver from nvidia. And run configuration.

If your at the command line

sudo apt-get install links
links www.nvidia.com
(navigate and download the drivers)
sh name-of-drive-file
After thats done
dpkg-reconfigure xorg-xserver

Then startx and you should be off!

hello Shelmutt2. thank you for the advice. however, i do already know how to do this. the problem (as OP says) is that the computer (not X) crashes. several others with this card and nforce4 chipset have reported simliar.

Sorry i was not more clear

Only think I can suggest is either try the openource nvidia driver (no 3d support), or the latest beta driver from Nvidia.
