Keyboard occasionally acts up during typing

I got this decent older laptop, a Dell Latitude CPx.

The problem I noticed is that once in a while, probably each paragraph of typing, the cursor will jump around(keystroke becomes a different keystroke/sometimes the cursor position is halfway up a different paragraph all of a sudden) or inputs an incorrect keystroke during typing. Or sometimes the shift/ctrl keys don't respond.

What can I do to correct this?
At first I thought it was the touchpad below the keyboard, that I was accidentally occasionally rubbing it and causing these things to happen. But I disabled the touchpad and still this occurs.

Thanks in advance for your help. It took me way too long to type this. I hope it can be resolved.
