Recovering Data

I just finished swapping out an old 40gb Maxtor for a Seagate 80GB HD, the old HD still contains my previous windows account which when I attempt to access states that I do not have the nessecary rights, im guessing this is because I had previously chosen to make my files private, is there any way to access the files, maybe I can somehow access the files as an alt user and enter the Username and PW of the windows account?
