hi,

1. how does a installation of FREEBSD handle different equipment.

ex. computer dies, can I put that hard drive on a different unit?

2. I did a back up with dump utility,
when doing a restore can it be done on a hard disk of different size?

thx and have a good one,

sam

Yes. Most likely more expediently, if computer 'B' has similar/identical specs.

AFAIK dump will copy bit for bit, even blank space- therfore, the drive you copy to should be at least as large as the original.

Misfit138,

thx for the reply, what I found out was that its no really hardware independent, so as you said only works if the hardware is very similar, else you get kernel panic

about the hard drive, the question was in regards to imaging, where you should do a similar size hard drive, but as you state dump can be pass on to any hard drive as long as
it can hold the size of the dump

anyway thx and have a nice one,

sam
