PIO is an old ATAPI accronym (can't even remeber what it stands for) DMA (Direct Memory Access) bypasses certain things and give more direct thus faster access, i can't remember the specifics and in depth reasons all i know is its faster and better!!!

All you should really know is PIO is just older technology and DMA is now the modern and is way faster.

Ahh ic well thats good 2 kno i hade my 60gig Maxtor on PIO and now its on DMA not sure if i see a diference but hey im not gona complain =p

You'll notice differences when something is like intense as for gaming maps and benchmarking drives.

the drive will be faster in intense operations like gaming etc, defrag etc etc!!
