Atom not impressive performance

kinda do but umm 800mhz 5watt TDP max vs 1.8ghz 3watt TDP max. i bet though that difference is due to the arch of each, in-order vs superscalar.

Actually the geode is meant for this purpose and is about the same wattage. I doubt it has the same performance though.

just for reference on this, last time i found a geode setup was on directon. it was a 10watt cpu at 1ghz, on a socket 370/A board...

According to wikipedia, they have 1-6 watt cpus, and last I heard they were around P3 performance.

wiki is user edit so i really dont trust it much... i would need to dig on amd's site but dont recall ever finding a 1watt cpu. though i would expect its cpu speed to be about 400mhz-500mhz, at p3 performance that isnt Atom competion...

these ran in speed he newest gen, is 800mhz at .9watts, -40c to 85c temp range. the downside is the cpu carries 128k L2 vs 512k or was it 1mb (lost track) on the atom cpu. the highest speed geode i can find is 1.75ghz at 14watts, so still not low enough to compete with Atom at 1.8ghz 3watt TDP.

Do you guys think AMD is working on something to compete with Atom / improve the Geode? Or do you think they'll just ignore that area for now?

VIA may be able to compete with Atom right now, but Intel will quickly pull ahead when they move the Atom to 45nm and make more improvements in the 2nd generation.

well if they dont then they could in the not to distant future. lose that market they have now for the geode's, unless they make them even cheaper or better. as i see it, highly possible if via C7/atom's getter better per clock. more will be using them in the segments the geode is in.

Puma is similiar to Centrino, an all AMD platform for laptops.

ok so puma is not even in the same segment as Atom. puma would then be competing agianst mobile c2d's. im starting to get to the point where i only remember what i want to use when it comes out. after reading those links,thanks shig, my memory got jogged about puma... movin along.....

@ Atom performance - Price also has to be considered, these atom dies are so small, Intel will be able to pump them out at very low cost. I think I saw the best atom CPU being under 100$

Puma is for low power enviroments, not ULP
