My subwofer previously blew:( so I'm looking for a replacement. I loved that box- it did not give me a headache and it seemlessly intergrated into the system. I'm looking for something similar to it and I'll like to keep my budget below 10 thousands. My room is about 10 by 15 metres and perhaps 3metres tall?

I currently have 4 CS7.2 thiel and levinson 20.6. Should I upgrade it? If so, what do I look at? To brodern the search, let's not cap the budget right now.

Thanks for all replys!

Edit- I mainly listen to instrumental. Just recommend me a few and I'll check it out!

Bump :). What are those 500 000 systems they are all talking about? Could you name me some award winning ones please? I wish to compare it against mine.

If the box was expensive, and truely loved, is it not possible (or feasible) to repair it?

Other then that, there are just too many subwoofers out that to try and match up to your current horns. Have you looked at anything that your current speakers manufacturer has to offer?

I got this puppy 10in 200w and it shakes the whole fuggin house... and its the smallest they offer

They also have a slightly cheaper 12in 200w

I'm a big fan of servo-corrected subs. Helps to sort out any room problems. In a room that large (30x50 feet? Really?) you will need some serious output. I'd highly recommend auditioning the Velodyne 1812 Signature. You should be able to find it for just under $10k, depending how friendly you are with your dealer. Link here: http://www.velodyne.com/products/product.aspx?ID=3&sid=547r113u

The DD-18 is also a great sub, perhaps a tad small for a room as gigantic as yours (over 14000 cubic feet if my math isn't way off) but worth auditioning as well. Here's a Stereophile review: http://www.stereophile.com/subwoofers/604velodyne/index.html

Of course, for my money, I'd just build one, and save a bucket of money. Speakers are tough to get right but subwoofers are a very easy DIY project. Throw in an SMS-1 http://www.velodyne.com/products/product.aspx?ID=15&sid=718u892a and you're golden...

edit: nd4, I get creeping horrors every time you post pics of that setup - we gotta talk about speaker placement!

[Thread Hijack] How are you liking those eDs? I've been mulling over replacing my ageing speakers (although they still work perfectly fine) with something more audiophile like, and they arent expensive either. [/Thread Hijack]

I do have a reasonably big house (60 000 sq feet in built) though I don't know exactly how big the room is.
I may try to DIT :santa: but I don't think it'll sound good... Anyway, could you explain servo-corrected subs please? I know nothing about audio.

Unfortunately, the cost of fixing the sub just isn't justifiable. I must as well buy a new one. The previous one was good with most frequencies esp. the low inaudible ones but too soft to shake the room. I don't know but I think 12"+ is a reasonable size to start with, what do you think?

Ah! the sms-1 looks good! It's something like an eq if I'm not wrong.

Hmm, the dd-18 seems good. What about the thiel ss4? And what is the crossover sterephile is talking about?

I know it's very subjective but I'll emphasis that I want some opinions before going down to the shop.

Thanks for you're replies so far! Keep it coming!

Might I suggest getting multiple subs, as well as a transducer or two to really feel those lows without having to over work a single sub?

I can't believe I forgoten about that... Perhaps I should buy 4 of them :). However, I don't think I'll get the buttkicker. Let me drop down and get some.

12" would be much too small to move enough air for your room size. 10x15 meters is big, about 3 times the size of my whole apartment. If the room opens to a kitchen or other room, you have to take that airspace into account as well. You need something that will move a ton of air.

Yes, the SMS-1 is an EQ. The Velodyne DD series has a built in crossover that can plug into a TV. It displays your in-room bass response, and lets you make parametric EQ adjustments while seeing their effect on the response in real time. Many reviewers were using this EQ and display to test other brands of subwoofer because it was so convenient. Velodyne figured that people weren't going to buy their subs just to use as an adjustment tool for OTHER subs, so they released the hardware/software seperately.

Servo correction involves a small sensor on the cone of the subwoofer, and circuitry that reads input from it. Last I checked, it sampled at 16khz. Basically if the sub is not moving in the way it should be according to the amp's output signal, the circuitry adjusts the output signal to ensure total control of the driver's cone. This is opposed to a standard sub amp which just sends out the signal and hopes the cone is moving in the predicted manner.

It takes a hell of a lot of amplifier power, but Velodyne takes care of that for you with a 1250 watt RMS/3000 watt peak class D amp built in :santa:

While the Thiel SS4 is well reviewed, I have a feeling for your room size and the cost of each option, a pair of DD-18's will serve you much better. You'll need to audition them to tell for sure. Just make sure each sub is on a dedicated circuit

Building your own, if you went for a high end pair of subs with decent amplification and an SMS-1 (single one can equalize 2 subs just fine) you could make something outstanding for under $2000 including having someone build the cabinets, if you don't want to bother. The catch with DIY is that you can't audition before buying :p

I dunno but I find your story somewhat unbelievable..

this is a 60,000 square foot house...

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/7f/The_Breakers_rear.jpg

Its also over twice the size of John Edwards 28.000 foot mansion...

Yet earlier you don't want to upgrade from because it costs too much...

I own a 8800GTS 320GB GPU. Don't wish to upgrade to a better one as it will cost more right?

@evilisier. Yes, that's roughly the size of my house though only 3 stories and well, more modern-if you will?

Btw, it's not 10 by 15. I remembered wrongly. It's 5 by 11 metres.

Regarding computers- my parents do not fund my computer. I have to save up my own money. That's why I can't spludge. I hate it and but they claim it's money management.

Back to the topic, they sound pretty similar. The thiel isn't loud on the high bass nor the mid-high bass as compared to the other one. I won't buy just yet cause my parent's are too busy.

OK, 4500 cubic feet or so. A single DD-18 would be plenty, even a DD-15 might be good enough.. Audition both when you get a chance..
