I am building a new PC and going w/ 2 velociraptors in RAID0. I really want to get the best out of these so I want to make sure my system is defragged the best it can be and all the data moved to one side of the disc.

What program is best to do this? I would assume it'd be a self-booting linux build of some sort so it could hit all the Windows system files and move everything around w/o having to worry about them being in use. Any help is MUCH appreciated, thank you!

Thanks guys, I am reading through it now.

Also to note: free is REALLY preferred and this will be running in Vista64 bit

Defragmenting using the inbuilt Windows defrag API ensures safety. The Windows default as well as commercial/free defragmenters use this API for their operation.

You probably know this, if you have a Vista/WHS volume formatted with a cluster size less than 16KB, with VSS enabled on it, then defrag may trigger purging of shadow copies. Defragging under such a scenario is best done with the VSS compatible defrag mode of the defragmenter as this will minimize file movement (and unfortunately the 'quality' of defrag too) and consequently shadow copy activity.

Also, the windows file system (NTFS in this case) sees RAID just as it would see a single drive, and so does the defragmenter. The distinction between the physical components (drives) of the array is made at the controller card level. If you are interested in knowing more about how defrag works with RAID, please feel free to download this or other white papers from the knowledge center of our website

Hope this helps.
