PC not resuming after scan disk...

I just installed a new WD Caviar Black 1TB HDD and when running the scan disk for errors my monitor will not display anything after awhile (it practically shuts off) but the PC is still running.

    How do I fix this?

1TB would take a long time to scan my aunts laptop runs sacn disk all the time, and its only a 60GB partition? And it takes 30 minutes. Leave it running over night and see if it ever finishies.
