gary, in
im trying to upgrade my current gaming tower with budget friendly parts. i currently have a giga-byte GZ-7VRX mobo but want to upgrade to something newer. i want at least 4 gig max ram, and at least a 2.0Ghz CPU. i already have a 450W PSU and i would like to reuse it, and i dont need SATA ports on the mobo, i have a PCI sata card. what do you guys recommend. i would like to spend no more than $100, it can be either new, used, or refurbed, i dont really care. also, if its a mobo/cpu bundle, that would be helpful. i would prefer either a gigabyte brand or asus brand, but its not neccessary.

$100 upgrades for the mobo ram and cpu are hard to find my friend. Most cpu/mobo combos are in the $200 range, and thats no ram.

dont care about cpu, i would prefer one that is easy to overclock. im pretty new to gaming machines and i dont want to kill any parts before i start gaming.

well depending on your background with ocing you may find amd easier then intel. though from most posts i have seen, amd'ers have said intel core 2 was pretty easy. mainly because of the fact there is no HTT buss to worry about.

you might look at say

E8400 E0 revision
Gigabyte EP45-UD3P (just a bit over your $100 by $30 but well worth it) or GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3LR ($102.99 at newegg)
DDR2-1066 cas5 ram, either a 2x1gig or 2x2gig kit, $25 difference on newegg for 2gig vs 4gig's.

if you go the amd route look at say a PII X3 either 710 or 720.. for motherboards im not to sure but from what i keep reading. you want one with a amd southbridge 700/750, for ram you could use the same DDR2 suggestion i gave above...

For AMD option:
Either of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2000340343 1050746438&name=Phenom II X3 decisions, decisions. Quite a leap in price for 0.2 GHz and nothing else, maybe a bit higher OC cap, but might be just the other way round. It's a game of luck
Mobo; go Gigabyte.. 780G or 790X are pretty affordable options with the mentioned SB700/750: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128382 or http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128387 Don't think about adding another vid card to the 780G, not even a small PhysX card. The second PCI-E 16x slot only runs at 4x and disables two PCI-E 1x slots.

Sorry if I break any rules by just simply linking parts from newegg, I'm just too used to it from another forum. Note me somehow if I am.
