folding 2x nvidia cards on Ati chipset?

Make sure that you use the "-gpu 0" flag on one of the GPU clients and the "-gpu 1" flag on the other GPU client (without the quotes), or the 2 GPU clients will not work correctly. For that price, I would definitely get 2 of them. 8k PPD is not bad at all.

From what I remember from when I set up an 8600 card, the 4K ppd number that dark bishop mentioned would be for BOTH cards running.

I think that 1800ppd is pretty optimistic for an 8600GT. (There were some very small test units that got numbers like that, but they were a really short run) Probably more in the neighborhood of 900~1100 with the current units out there.

I'll switch mine from my 8800GT to my 8600GT and see. I'll try to report back shortly.

EDIT: Yep. PPD dropped to about 1/4 of what the 8800GT was getting. Which makes sense - 32 shaders vs. 112 shaders. So expect about 900~1100 out of the 8600GT.

I had 3 x MSI OC 8600GTS that would only pull 1400 PPD and one EVGA 8600GTS that would do the same. On my laptop with the 8600GT mobile I get 1100 PPD. I guess they aren't bad for the amount of shaders.

If you're only going to get 900 - 1100 PPD out of them, then it might not be worth it. I got an 8800GS for about $75 off ebay and it gets like 2k - 4k PPD. So for an extra $15 you could get an extra 200 - 1800 PPD and still have a slot open for another card in the future.

well I think Im gonna get em, and I will deffinatly oc, maby even V-mod both to get the clocks up, I want to see 8k+ ppd out of this machine.

I agree, you should probably get a better card. Those cards are really aren't worth overclocking and there is NO WAY you can get 8k out of those two cards. I have two 9600 gso's (each with 96 shaders) and to get ~8k out of them I need to clock their shaders to around 1782 mhz, which generates A LOT of heat.

I have a better suggestion, this 9600 gso, which is actually a rebranded 8800 gs. You can get one of these for $50 after rebate. Be sure you get the 96 shader version, not the cut down 48 shader version.

Edit: you are looking for a second 9600 gso for $50 dollars, amazon has the same card for $50 after rebate, so you can get two cards for $50 because the rebates are separate.
