I need a little help updating the client. I have the comp in my sig and I am folding running as a service. I set it up so long ago that I don't remember even how it works. I have a batch file that stops the service running. How to I remove the service so I can set up the new 'faster' client?

This is a basic "drop in" process. Drop in your new fah client, and move your old fah client, out of the folder. (don't delete it just yet).

You may need to unzip the new client file, but there will be no need to run install again.

Finally, you'll name the new fah client, the same name as the old fah client. (It won't care, it knows what version it is).

Your service settings won't know the difference. :D

Delete the client.cfg file to force the client into config mode. The fields in the client.cfg file have changed.

Ok, download the executable drop in 6.29 client, from here:

http://folding.stanford.edu/English/DownloadWinOther

The file you want is the "drop in binary", don't get the one's up above it!

More upgrade info in detail:

1. Stop the current client by using Control Panel >> Administrative Tools >> Services. Highlight FAH and right click (or select "Action") and choose Stop.

2. Open your current folder (that you used to run the smp client).
3. Either rename or delete the old Fah executable.
4. Unzip/copy the new 6.29 executable in the same folder.
5. run the new executable with the -configonly flag then check the config (there are some new fields to add).
6. Restart the client as usual.

Do this after a WU is done, or just starting up. It's not unusual to lose a WU when you upgrade.

Rock On!

ok I installed and configured in the old directories following your instructions. The bat file on my desk top says

Code:
@ECHO OFF
ECHO. **********************
ECHO. *****STARTING FAH******
ECHO. **********************

sc start "FAH@C:+Program Files+FAH1+FAH504-Console.exe"
sc start "FAH@C:+Program Files+FAH2+FAH504-Console.exe"

does this mean I need to rename the new exe ([email protected]) files to FAH504-Console.exe?

the stop bat says
Code:
@ECHO OFF
ECHO. **********************
ECHO. *****STOPING FAH*******
ECHO. **********************

sc stop "FAH@C:+Program Files+FAH1+FAH504-Console.exe"
sc stop "FAH@C:+Program Files+FAH2+FAH504-Console.exe"

so once I rename I am good? after restart?

Yes, and yes to a client restart. You may want to run the client with the -configonly flag before starting the service, because the new client has options that 5.04 didn't have. If you don't rerun the config, you'll get the default, which may be fine or not. (should of read Adaks post better)

It isn't necessary to delete client.cfg. If you use start/run and browse to the executable and add -configonly after the path, the client will enter configuration mode with the paramaters you currently have set as the default. The original file will be overwritten with the new paramaters. It'll save re-entering the user name and team number at the least.

So I have been running the update and ... nothing is happening. No work units ?

How come I am not getting any work units done?
Heres my cfg 1.. Comp details are in the sig

What the heck is going on here? I am losing places on the team!!!!!!

Was the last Client Shutdown message from you stopping F@H or does it stop by itself?

It looks like it is running fine. How long did it sit at

Code:
[04:26:43] Completed 1455000 out of 1500000 steps (97%)
[04:26:43] Extra SSE boost OK.

The single core client can in many cases take 30 minute or more per percent.

I think perhaps your efforts to make it, by renaming the executable, have backfired.

I don't see anything wrong in the log, except that it looks like you reconfigured the client to run as a service and it didn't. There is no -svcstart in the arguments after your -configonly. 5.04 and 6.29 set up the service start differently and that may be an issue. You needed to run 5.04 with -configonly in console mode to remove the 5.04 service start and then run the 6.29 client with -configonly to reinstall the service. You'd have to rewrite your batch files.

I assume you waited more than the 18 minutes it was taking to finish a frame on that WU, before declaring it dead.

I have not had a work unit completed since 3/25. It looks like it is all busted.

I think I need to uninstall it all and start over. Is there an easy way to do this?

Thanks!!

All fixed. I had renamed the files FAH504-console.exe.exe which was causing problems. I think I lost my old work units but my CPUs are at 100% now and I am excited to see what kind of improvement I get from this new client. Hopefully I will be getting my millionth pt soon.
