foobar is extremely fun to play with, it took me many hours trolling head-fi to finally get it where i want it

been a vlc user for years.. wouldnt hurt to try mpc :)

I use Media Player Classic Home Cinema installed by K-Lite Mega Codec Pack. It is awesome, it plays everything, all subtitles working. Media Player Classic uses the codecs installed on the system by K-Lite, so you can install only the codecs you really need. In the past I used KM Player (but is very crowded with thousand options) and VLC Player which is good if you want a player with independent codecs.
I use MPC for music too since I have my music collection organized with playlists.

I like mediamonkey and winamp for audio players. media monkey will even sync with iOS 4 devices if you have a iphone or ipod. Both have fantastic library support. Mediamonkey is audio only, winamp has a video player but it sucks.

mpc with codec packs is great. VLC is also great for a no codec hassel, although I find it stinks at SPDIF support.
