Yes. Just has to be the same core for SLI. I think ATI has some hybrid Crossfire where you can use a 5870 and 5850 at the same time though... not certain.
Yes you can but performance wise it acts like 2 5850s though when you crossfire 5850 and a 5870. Or so i've read.
At 1920x1080/1200 a single 5870/5850 or 470/480 can plow through that res with copious amount of (unnecessary) AA. When thats not enough in a year, then do SLI for another year and hop on the every other gen bandwagon.
And i totally agree with Earthdog here. I feel this is probably the best step to take but its up to you. I personally like radeon over nvidia but that is my option. I think i'm just bias to go for a radeon cause i have one. But i'm being upfront about it so there.
Anyways to get back on topic I would actually go for a 5870 over 2 gtx 460s. Yes the 2 gtx 460s will outperform the 5870 but not by much. Then later when prices drop you can crossfire it later.
You can get one for $370 at newegg. I like sapphire because they have great customer service.
