Looking at some benchmarkls for graphics cards today, seeing all the different resolutions and FPS and AA etc etc... why isn't 1280 x 720 a benchmarking resolution?

In todays HD world, 1280 x 720 is classed as a HD res, and with the majority (im assuming) of screens being widescreen, I would have thought more widescreen benchmarks than 4:3 resolutions, such as 1024 x 768 or 1280 x 1024.

Is there a reason for 1280 x 720 not being a 'standard' benchmarking resolution?

Welcome to the forums :)

At 1280x720 you are likely CPU-limited, wheras higher resolutions are more GPU-limited. Hence, most gaming benchmarks tend to focus on higher resolutions.

Most modern gaming cards will do 1280x720 with highish detail without issue.

never thought of that... not really a 'stress-test' or benchmark if its going to give good results everywhere (unless its a super duper card).

Well for the most part if it runs well on higher resolutions it will do well in lower resolutions. Because cards these days are so crazy, there is no need to test the lower resolutions. Also most people these days are running 1280 x1024 or bigger.

Are you concerned because you need benchmarks for lower end vid cards?

up the others covered it, 1280 x 720 is nothing for most GPU's these days, your going to be more reliant on cpu+gpu at that res then just GPU.

Nah, not for a bad card... my new computer will have a 5770. I have read that some modern games run less than desirable at 1920 x 1080.

I am planning to hook up my comp to my TV, which can support a few 4:3 res's, and 1280 x 720 and 1920 x 1080 res's.

It was mainly curiosity for 720 benchmarks.

I game at 1280x720 currently but my monitor is 1280x1024, looking at 1280x1024 benchmarks gives a rough idea of where a game will perform at 1280x720.

Not sure where your getting the less than desireable comments, but Global Agenda is Very Pretty and playable even on my system (see sig) @ 1920x1080 :D and my card is no where near great. granted that game is probably not the MOST graphically demanding, but i know it put's a load on my G92.. get's quite warm. I have all settings on max with no AA.

I dont beleive i've seen it drop below 35fps, even in merc missions, havent done any AvA or raids yet though, as i just got the game.

i can say, i had a 5770 and it had no issues with most games at 1920 x 1080, just cant really turn on AA or AF, but i can BC2, and most valve games fine, TF2, there were drops now and then with a Q9400 @ 3.2Ghz but it held pretty darn good for a $150 card at the time.
