im trying to setup my server through a wired connection to my router but for some reason it wont get an ip at all, but if i connect a usb wireless card it works fine, does anyone know whats going on and how i go about fixing it?

also i didnt know if this should go here or the networking forum so just move it if need be

Things to check:

  • Are the appropriate drivers for the NIC installed?
  • Is the NIC enabled?
  • Is the NIC set to DHCP?*
  • Does the cable test as good?

*Most servers use a static IP by default, this is preferred. Ensure that your IP address is on the same subnet as your router.

have already checked and tried all of that and it still wont connect to the internet, when i had server 2003 on my old server it would work fine but this is just strange

Disabled IPV6 on the NIC? When you plug a connection in after that, what does "ipconfig" show?

i cant seem to get it disabled, is there any other way besides editing the registry?

EDIT: looks like i got it disabled but its still not getting an ip nor is setting a static ip working, im stumped

Can't you just right click the NIC, hit properties and uncheck it?

i would also do a nic diagnostic check.

do you have dns installed?
if you have the server running as a dns server then you have to have a static ip and if you still receive dhcp from the router and the ip changes on the server then it won't be able to resolve dns against itself.

are there any other network adapters installed?

right click on the network adapter, the third option should be diagnose, right under status

Your jmicron NIC shows disconnected. The 169.x (windows default) address is on the Microsoft Loopback Adapter, not a hardware connection. Provided you've installed the correct driver for the adapter and you're using a known good cable, the only thing left is that your adapter has gone south. Buy a cheap Gigalan PCI/PCI-E card and you'll be good to go.

It's likely that there's a driver issue for the NIC, as MS Server 2008 is probably not a supported OS for your machine. This leaves you with 2 options:

  1. Get a compatible USB LAN adapter
  2. Get a compatible cardbus adapter

What do you have your server plugged into? Is it a standard SOHO router or is it something else? Also too, are you running any firewall/security programs?
i have none installed, im using a router from my isp and a linksys wrt54gl it does the same thing on both

can you set the ip address manually and get connection?
i have tried and it did not work

i have used windows 7 drivers for everything else on the laptop for windows server 2008 and they had no issues?
