Hey guys, just wondering if I should spend the extra money getting the 1gb version of the 460 GTX or not?

I do a lot of gaming, and I'd like to play on max settings. I have a 2048x1152 Resolution LCD Monitor. I've been using my 8800 GTS, but it's been baked twice now, and I'm not sure how much longer it can hold out.

I'm not really an avid overclocker, I might OC for games if I can't play it on max settings, but otherwise, I don't OC just for the numbers, only to get max settings.

Is it worth the extra cash for the 1gb version? As a student, my budget is pretty tight, so I'd rather not spend more money than I need to. A MIR isn't that great in my situation either, haha.

My CPU is the E8400 Wolfdale if that makes a difference.

You're looking at maybe 10% more performance at that resolution. Up to you if the price premium is worth it. Just stay away from the 1GB "SE" version.

Hmm, if you don't mind my asking (I'm "trying" to learn instead of being "ignant" my whole life, haha)...

What is the real difference between the 1gb and 768mb versions?

You are looking at some bandwidth loss going from 1gb down to 768mb (256bit bus vs 192 bit bus) and some performance loss at high resolutions and higher AA settings. Thats pretty much the extent of my knowledge.

In all the benches Ive seen, under 1920x1200 the difference between the 2 models is very small, 5-10%. So the difference is cost and personal preference. My brother has a 22" monitor and Ill be grabbin him a 460 768mb. Hes never going to SLI and he wont know what hes missing either lol.

yea unless your looking to get the best performance you can in that price range, if your going to SLI later down the road, or your going to need the extra memory and resolution for gaming or other apps go with the 1gb. both of my EVGA's run great and overclock crazy. my temps stay comfortable if i don't push them too hard.

As far as I know, the memory interface is really the only difference.

I went with the 1gb PNY XLR8 version and it was worth it. :)

1GB version inaddition to the memory has more internal components enabled.

+1 for 1GB just make sure it isn't an "SE" version.

if you have your heart set on the 460, the MSI talon attack clearly blows every other 460 out of the water with every possible attribute, but you might as well pony up the dough for the MSI gtx560 twin frozr. Just be aware that the 400 series has had stuttering issues with certain folks so be ready to RMA it if it happens to you.

The differences between the different 460s:

Card: 1GB SE/ 768 / 1GB / 560ti (added since it's essentially a 460 with all 8 multiprocessors enabled)

Streaming Multiprocessors: 6/7/7/8
Shader Units: 288/336/336/384
Texture Units: 48/56/56/64
ROPs: 32/24/32/32
Clocks vary but reference: Core 650/675/675/822 Shader: 1300/1350/1350/1644 Mem: 3400/3600/3600/4008
Memory Interface: 256-bit/192-bit/256-bit/256-bit

The 768 is equal to the 1gig (non-SE) in everything but ROPS and memory interface. Also of note, the ram on the 560s can hit 5 GHz.

wasn't there a lot of issues with the SE version? i heard those cards had a lot of problems. i could always be wrong too..

Nice concise comparison.

I haven't seen that yet. Its fairly new on the market (a week or two old?). Its really slow if that what you mean? The SE 1GB version is slower than the 768MB version.

560 ti DESTROYS a 460 1GB though... It cant even be placed in the same category IMHO...

Probably true. The increased number of shaders and stream processors and clock rates put it in a whole other category. Those are the same sort of difference that seperate other cards like the 465, 470, 480. They are non trivial performance wise.

Thanks for the info guys.

My mind was made up when I snagged an MSI Cyclone 1GB for 150$, woohoo!
