Yeah, but you're paying more for diesel. And isn't there gas stations that have better/worse diesel than others?

Diesel here is only 40 more cents per gallon, well worth the MPG increase. Unleaded V8s are in the low teens with most current pickups. Then you look at something like a Jetta TDI getting 40+, and you see that even though diesel is more expensive than unleaded, it's worth it. If I buy a pickup truck, which I've wanted to do for a while, it'll be a diesel or nothing.

My grandfather has a 1997 F250 with the 7.3L (or could be the 6.4L) and gets a trip of about 850 miles on both tanks.

I remember that when he bought it (brand new) that the engine was actually meant to be in the 1998 models but the chassis for it wasn't out yet...

He still has it and has over 300k miles I believe.

ya diesel is much more efficient.... i really REALLY hope toyota brings over their lil 3.0L inline 4 D-4D and pops it in the tacoma... id love to have the hp of the 3.4L v6 gasser and TONS more torque than any other offering in the tacoma and get 35mpg to boot.

needless to say id be glad to pay 40c more a gallon if i could get almost 2x the mpg and tons more torque and similar hp.

ford is def doing some cool things with their ecoboost motors!

It's true with mine as well (standard gets 1mpg lower). Has to do with gear ratios, the 5 speed automatics have a good high gear (kinda like an overdrive). A couple fewer RPMs at higher cruise speeds = slightly better fuel efficiency.

    - 11.6 driving on the highway.

At 236,000 miles on the dial, it really needs a overhaul, but I've got a 383 sitting in the garage waiting for winter. The swap will include EFI and a transmission rebuild, so I'm hoping to make those numbers quite a bit higher.

I haven't really tested my highway millage outside of rush hour. Its something I probably should do but mpg isn't really a big concern of mine. With my '06 GTO 6-speed, I get between 9-15 mpg city depending on how I drive (this is legit city driving btw, not suburb driving), rush hour highway driving with half the trip distance being stop and go scenarios and a/c running, I get around 20. Like I said, I need to test out some pure highway driving or highway driving when it isn't rush hour. I should get high 20s. 6th gear cruising on pretty flat ground, my instant mpg display says I'm getting 30s. Either way, I'm quite happy with my MPG considering my car has a 400hp 400lb/ft 6L engine.

I'm a nerd, I track my MPG every tank.

    1999 Honda Prelude 2.2 inline 4. I give myself 2 vtec engagements a day ~ 28 MPG.

I keep trying for 30, I think 28 is the best i'm gonna be able to do. :|

I drive between 40 and 60 miles a day, good mix of urban and rural.

Lately it's been around 42 each trip, because of my new area and traffic. In a rural setting in the summer, I'll pull 48-49. '93 Toyota Tercel 4spd manual, slightly ecomodded.

Newer automatics are getting better highway mileage because of gear ratios, if they would put equal ratio'd manuals in, they would be capable of much better mileage.

92 Miata that I use as my DD I get about 25-27 around town. I can get 32mpg on the interstate if i stay below 4000rpms.

94 Miata that is the track rat / weekend toy, I can get 32mpg cruising on the interstate. At the track I think I get about 12mpg running 100octane. Boost tends to kill the mileage.

I just checked the mileage I got when I came back from the rig in Texas this morning when I filled up; 26.2 mpg driving 75-80 on the interstate and the last 10 miles of the trip I was in curve carving mode and winding up the turbo on my 07 Mazdaspeed6. That really surprised me that it was that good, because that little 4 banger loves to drink gas when it's spun up.

My normal mixed driving mileage averages around 21-23 mpg.

2003 Buick Century - Roughly 26-27. This car has 215k miles on it. It is in dire need of some work to get it back to reasonable quality. Also we live in a valley that is cut off from the rest of the state by high passes. So that kills the hell out of the mileage.

Also we have a 2006 Ford Taurus. That averages about 28-30 while going over the mountains every day.

Not too shabby for 6cyl cars that need some tuning.
