2.0 vs 3.0

I am trying to get my head around this issue.

From what I have been able to find, pci 3.0 is twice as fast as 2.0.

From THIS page.

Base Clock Speed: PCIe 3.0 = 8.0GHz, PCIe 2.0= 5.0GHz, PCIe 1.1= 2.5GHz
Data Rate (per lane & per direction): PCIe 3.0 = 1000MB/s, PCIe 2.0= 500MB/s, PCIe 1.1= 250MB/s
Total Bandwidth (x16 link): PCIe 3.0 = 32GB/s, PCIe 2.0= 16GB/s, PCIe 1.1= 8GB/s
Data Transfer Rate: PCIe 3.0 = 8.0GT/s, PCIe 2.0= 5.0GT/s, PCIe 1.1= 2.5GT/s



This being said, does that mean a pci 3.0 8X slot will be just as fast and carry just as much data as a pci 2.0 16X?

Yes. With a PCIe 3 card.

Sorry, I forgot to add that this is assuming a 3.0 card and Ivy Bridge processor.

Will PCIx3.0 require sandy bridge or help it in any way?

Sandy Bridge does not support 3.0. The top end extreme I7 can be made to work with it but really we have to wait for the release of Ivy Bridge (April?)
