Depends on the distro, and the packages installed in the image. Generally speaking, yes, there is a GUI available in Linux (if installed).

If you're referring to the image that TC linked, no, it does not come with a GUI. But, it's all managed via a web interface, so it should be easy to manage.

Ok, so it uses something like Apache to interface with it from another scource if you are not on it directly with terminal?

I need to go to linux school

No gui interface to work directly at the console. It has apache web server running to serve up a configuration web page. You watch the console as it boots and it will tell you what IP address it picked up via DHCP from your router. You open a browser on another computer on your lan and point it to that IP address and voila - you get a form based config page. You enter everything and select reboot at the bottom. It's a very streamlined linux package based on slackware64 13.37, and he has compiled tweaked kernels for different cpu architectures like sandy bridge and amd - you want to select the appropriate one for your system of course. You'll want to grab the kraken from the link I posted because his image excludes dev tools, so you can't compile the kraken yourself. The config page also lets you enable Tears' langouste decoupler - *DO NOT* enable that until after your first work unit has downloaded. It doesn't seem to work right until after the initial download.

In general it seems to be a few seconds faster than any other linux distros I've tried, but it's not suitable for a full desktop setup. It's simply a lean and mean folding machine LOL.

I can't help you with the file download - I believe he must be hosting it off a home connection.

EDIT:
Is there another download link for the USB Boot image? The file is sitting at 0% for over an hour... says 52bytes/sec

I'm getting fairly slow rates as well. Trying to download them myself...if successful, I'll re-host and provide a link.

TC -- How did you contact the author? I'd like to ask permission to re-host and/or offer him some space so the downloads are accessible for everyone else.
Edit: Found his email on the website, but if you have another contact route please let me know...

No - I also contacted him through his site. FYI the first page of this thread has a lot of good config info about using this in a virtual machine in addition to some of the settings and enabling ssh - great for logging into from a windows machine with a terminal program like putty:

Hello,

I did get your E-mail but when I tried to reply the mail bounced with a no user found message. I thought I would setup an account and reply here since you sent me the link.

A mirror for the images would be great. I live outside a small town and the bandwidth to my servers is limited at best. Thanks!

Also, since there was mention of the kraken in this thread, I have compiled a version of that which is here:

Now THAT is good service! Thank you for your Distro, and work! We highly appriciate it!

Also, it did download after a few... it was stuck at 12hrs, then the speed increased over time and finished in about an hour... Also, Maybe we could host it up on the HPcloud file server while its free for now? I didnt make one, but I could possibly figure it out with some help.

Also, to get the compiled version, will wget work?

Edit: wget worked great. Thanks!

Are you running Langouste? That looks very much the log does when the completed work unit is handed off to Langouste. The client doesn't know what happened to it, but Langouste just laughs and does its thing. (sorry for my simplistic terminology - it's the best I have for the Linux realm)

I didn't configure it to use Langouste. I've got a very fast connection for uploading, so I've never really bothered.

Plus I haven't gotten credit for it in the last 24 hours.

Plus it downloaded the same WU again.

If you restarted the bigadv work unit somewhere along the way, there is a chance it will fail. This is specifically an issue that happens in Linux from time-to-time. The best thing is to let the work unit run through completion before restarting the client. Otherwise, other possibilities could be a system stability issue or a problematic work unit which happens on occasion.

Thanks. I did register for HP's beta cloud computing service but I have not received a response yet. I can try and setup the files there if I am able to get an account on their cloud.

My apologies for that, I was updating some of the DNS records for my domains, and made an 'error'. ;)

I'll send you another email with your login information, so you can update/change the files as often as you'd like.
Thanks again for all of your hard work, and sorry for the delay in replying here. (I didn't get the forum emails, either, due to my little 'mistake')

Edit: I sent you an email with your login information. Currently, I'm downloading the files directly into your file directory.
It's pulling at roughly ~38K/s, so I can only do one file at a time.

Let me know if you need anything else. :)

Edit2: Decided to do the bulk download after all. Will updated this post and send off an email to you once they are complete.

Edit3: All files linked on your download page have been downloaded to my local machine, and are being uploaded to the server now.

Update: The author and I have been communicating via email and we have successfully mirrored his download content. He is in the process of updating the download links on his site. However, until then, the direct download links can be found here:
