Sys: AMD DC Opteron 170, 2GB RAM, DFI LanParty MB, Radeon XFX 6870. WinXP.

My previous graphics card was a 7800, and now kinda slow, so I upgraded it to a XFX 6870.

I'm now wondering if the 170 is capable of keeping the 6870 fed with data, or whether I should consider updating that too (budget would mean Core I7 2600K)

Any advice?

yes your 170 would Bottleneck your 6870 a fair bit . a i5 2500k or even an overclocked i3 would get the most out of your 6870 with out spending to much money .

Sad how CPUs have been the bottleneck in systems for years...
not realy m8 its been the gpu bottlenecking pcs only in the last 2years or so that a top gpus can handle games like crysis in 1080p maxed with out cf or sli needed to get good fps .

You can overclock an 1155 i3? Or are you talking about 1336 i3's?

We have a phenom 965BE combined with a 6870 and it plays bf3 with high/medium settings at 1920x1080. This is on an AM3 board, don't know about your situation.
There's some 8GB ram in too.
This combo plays all games fine.

1336 did not do i3`s it was the lga 1156 what did the i3`s . i meant he could use a stock i3 1155(cpu & mobo) as i dont think they overclock much. or pick up a cheap i3 1156(cpu & mobo) and overclock it to get the most out of his gpu . with out spending to much cash .

Oh snap, is that a 939 setup? Do you have your opty overclocked right now?

I'd wait for Ivy Bridge, just a few weeks and you'll smoke Sandy

I don't know about smoking Sandy but it is supposed to be around 10% clock for clock over the equivalent Sandy processor according to previews that are out in the wild. Most of the improvement on Ivy is with the integrated graphics I thought.

Having said that I'd wait a few weeks as well, Ivy will if nothing else make Sandy cheaper and that is always a good thing.

Benchmarks indicate a 5% to 15% increase in CPU performance for the Ivy Bridge Core i7 processors and a whopping 20% to 50% improvement on the graphics side.

Right, 5 to 15% or 10% like I said.... and like I said the most improvement is on the graphics side which doesn't matter when your not using the integrated graphics.
