Hi. I used a Dell 24" 1920 x 1200 IPS panel over 6 years and like the 16:10 very much. I want a 27" that is as good or better but am seriously out of date on displays.

I do some gaming, some photo work, and too much document work. My vision is OK but not great. I spend hours at a time on the desktop computer. This would be my display for years.

The thread here with the 400+ replies about the 16:9 monitors on eBay was very helpful. The graphics sound good and I don't mind eBay (got my VGA card there). But after reading it, I think I would miss the 16:10 so am willing to pay the premium for 16:10.

What are my choices in 2012? I can wait a bit if necessary and read more if you suggest links but am ready to buy. Thank you. :)

Unless you want to spend close to a grand for a 2560x1600 monitor, you essentially have no choice but to go 16:9 for less than 1/3 of the cost. Either way you're getting significantly more room than 1920x1200, I doubt you'll miss anything.

16x10 is only better than 16x9 when horizontal resolutions are equal, as far as workspace goes. I switched from my 1920x1200 dell to one of the korean specials and there is nothing to miss. It has way more vertical room, as well as way more horizontal room. To my knowledge, there are no 2560x1600 27" screens, you have to go 30" for that. The first one that comes to mind would be the dell 3011.

If you're willing to take the price up to $700-$800 and add a few inches, the same brands (Catleap, Yamakasi, Simian, etc.) have 30" 2560x1600 screens. I'd settle for the 16:9, though. Once the vertical is 1200, I'm happy. 1440 is just fine :)

[SOLVED] Chose Dell 24" 16:10

Final follow-up: Kept my Dell 24" built in 2005. And bought a Dell 24" 2412M 16:10 monitor for about $300 at Amazon for my wife's new Ivy Bridge 3570k build with the Intel HD4000 on-board graphics. She uses her rig for editing & writing, surfing, and email rather than gaming. It set up easily and looks very nice. Wish I had more room for more gear because I would get a 30" Dell and give her my 24" Dell. But now she gets a new monitor.:D

Thank you so much for all the help. :)

i too like 16x10.......much more verticle space .....i walk away from 16x9 as fast as i can....i think the manufacturers are trying to force 16x9 on us.,,,,,just like they did with the laptops and not offering 1650 x 1050..that was horrible
