What is a typical cpu temp for an idlling cpu (basic internet searching type activity)?

I am getting 96C which seems way too high.

My cpu speed currently is set to 1030 MHz.

I put the Cool master in and it has a mounting mechanism that doesn't let the base rest on the cpu. There is about 1/16 inch gap. I put the entire tube of thermal paste that came with the cpu, but I think either I mounted it wrong, or it needs a lot more paste.

Here is the cooler

You had to do something really wrong.

What CPU and Mobo do you have?

Don't use the PC till this is fixed.

You did install the right backplate and used all the parts properly? You need no more than a pea sized dot (usually less) for good paste application.

I just watched a you tube video, and I installed it wrong.

Reinstalled, all is good now. Prime95 max is 70c.
