Unified GPU/SMP benchmarking scheme: equal points for equal work

Looks like they are getting closer to raising the points and adding a QRB to GPU Folding.

A blog all about Folding@home, from its Director, Prof. Vijay Pande
    http://folding.stanford.edu
    (c) 2007-2012 Vijay Pande

The current benchmarking calculations for SMP and GPU projects are performed on different machines since originally the SMP cores could not perform the calculations that the GPUs cores could and vice versa (GPUs were only for implicit solvent calculations and SMP only for explicit solvent calculations). With recent advances in both cores and completion of our testing of these capabilities to ensure agreement, we are now confident we can do the same work on both cores. Thus, we feel that it is time to unify GPU and SMP benchmarking, both for simplicity and fairness.

In order to complete the move towards this plan of "equal points for equal work," new GPU projects will be benchmarked using the existing SMP benchmarking scheme. Based on our internal tests, the end effect of this new, unified benchmarking scheme would boost the points for the GPU projects, both in terms of base points but also by bringing Quick Return Bonuses to GPU clients. In order to test the new scheme, we have started a GPU3 project (Project ID: 8057) and released it for beta testing. Once the benchmarking scheme has been tested, all the current GPU projects will be re-benchmarked to reflect the changes in the benchmarking scheme.

Great news to me. I always had a ton of GPU power sitting idle because it wasn't worth the kWh compared to SMP/BIGADV.

I'm not sure they'd implement any straight point bonus that would make it equivalent, but a QRB might put GPU on par.

Be interesting how this pans out.

This might be a big boost for the GPU folders - and might even change the #1 team in FAH, back to EVGA, since they are (obviously) using a lot of GPU's on their team, versus the plethora of 4P's that the [H]ardOCP team is using to amass a lot of their points.

Run [H], Run!! The EVGA gang will be hot on your heels.

We ain't running anywhere, please bear in mind that there are still a lot of gpu folders on our team cranking out points - they are the silent folders on our team and still make you the bulk of the donor base.

If EVGA brings it, so much the better. Keeps us on our toes whilst we (the 4p mafia)perfect IL/PD overclocking

The project is 8057. Pulling 125k and 132k ppd for each gpu respectively at the moment. Hopefully I can slide back into the top 20 before this nice point bump disappears!

Enjoy them while you get them.
A lot of screaming going on over those.
If I would have known these were really this close I would have held off on the 4P.
I added the flag but didn't catch one so I finished the wu and shut down.

In all honesty though, I'm just glad I can boost the team a bit. You guys with the 4P servers still make me jealous (and you are putting in more "effort")!

So I have been folding for the last 24 hours on my 8320@4.4 and my GTX 570@875 and I have yet to see it issue me anything more than base credit for a GPU unit. Just how fast to you have to kick back a GPU unit to get QRB?

So your looking for an AMD FX motherboard, things you need to know. Whats the max safe temps/volts for an FX?

It appears that it is only for the 8057 WUs. Any other WUs will simply be base credit still.

You have to be running the beta flag on the gpu slot to even have a chance to get one.

If this really is the GPU situation going forward (which I doubt), I'll have 6 cards 460 to 670 burning rubber shortly. 58F outside. Not holding my breath though.

Do they make natural gas powered GPUs?
